I have to say that our friend Nancy puts me to shame. I am a slow runner, but I am a much slower walker......she puts me in the dust, walking to the parking lot at work! If I walked a 1/2 marathon, I don't think I could beat a 4 hour cut off.....I guess I just keep up my slow running!!!!! We will all come in at the same time!:confused3 :confused3

Nancy is only doing the half next year. The heat of Florida this last january was as much a factor in the race as the distance. Nancy really dug down and found the courage to get it done. We were all proud of her.

Walking Panda:hippie:

I am off on my long walk...should be about 8 miles round trip!
Hoping the walk way is ice free.

Oh, that includes meeting the kids for lunch, dropping a book off at the library, and possibly checking out the Repetitions Gym - Finally a FULL workout :rolleyes1

Hello, walking friends!

I'm with SamSam--6 miles an hour seems impossible. I'm struggling to maintain 4 mph (although I'm proud of how far I've come in ONE MONTH!).

Panda, you seem to be getting better every day. Take the walks slowly so you don't have to worry about reinjuring that achilles. Keep stretching! You'll be back to your regular Panda self soon enough, I hope.

Beth, I hope you are hanging in there. We're keeping good thoughts for you.

Lynn, have a good time with the dogs! I think construction work counts as strength training. I would count it in my "crosstraining" column. ;) Hope your weekend is wonderful!

Suzanne, welcome! Come on in, the walking's fine. :) Everyone here has been so nice to me since I showed up. :) I love how friendly and supportive everyone is.

Maria, I am discovering that sometimes it is about the miles and not the pace. I hope you have fun this weekend (whiffle ball! wow!). I recommend a hot bath, a good book, and a movie on cable tonight. :)

Today we did my longest walk ever--7.5 miles (7+.5 cooldown). It was too cold and the roads aren't clear enough to be out walking today (and the trails at the park would be way too icy/slushy/muddy), so we had to go back to the mall to do our walk. This meant once again finishing up while shoppers were in the mall (one elderly woman gave me a particularly harsh look as she deliberately stepped out in front of me).

DH walked with me the whole way this time, but his legs felt fatigued for the last mile we so slowed down a bit.

My thighs and hips were sore when I got up this morning from my "cross-training" of snowbuddy-building and photographing the dog (a lot of squatting!).

At the end of my workout, my hips felt a little sore, but dull and mild. We walked a half-mile for cooldown and ate Recovery Bars and drank more water. I stretched again.

Margie, enjoy that long walk! I am looking forward to weather warm enough to get my longs walks in outside. 8 miles! Woohoo! :cheer2:

I hope I didn't miss anyone...

Thanks Ms Duckie, I am thrilled... :cool1:

I did my 8.02 miles in 2 hrs and 10 minutes.
I think the time was great as my paths had some terrible-terrible sections of ice, slush, water, and even sections of mud! My Garmin said I had a max speed of 6.1 mph (Of course I don't know when that happened)

Nothing hurts. I think I am over being sick! :goodvibes

I just want to get back to maintaining the 15 minute mile for the distance. Hard to do with these winter weather conditions.

Hey, Panda you will be back up to speed soon ... just don't rush it! Patience-Please :yay:

Just popping in for a quickie.....

Margie, Duckie: great job on the long walks! You guys are really kicking butt!

Dave: hang in there....you should be feeling better soon!

Beth: hope you're having a better day....sending pixie dust.

John and I attempted an 8-miler today. We do the golf-course before it opens. Around mile 5 this dog comes out of nowhere.....he looks like someone's pet.....then, these 2 other wild looking dogs come chasing after him. We decided to take a short cut and stay clear of the dogs that did not look like pets! We finish the golf course with 6.44 miles under our belt and it's still 40 minutes before the first tee time. Ranger spots us and says you know you're not allowed to walk on the golf course. Me: Yeah, but we're over and done before anyone comes out. Ranger: "they" don't want anybody out here who isn't playing golf. Me: well, we're members and besides, our house is ON the golf course. Ranger: rules are rules Me: Well, we're finished now....if "they" want to come out at 6am and chase us off, that's fine with me. Ranger: you're from NY, right (!?!) So John and I decide we'll walk to the bagel store for coffee and that will give us over 8 miles. All of a sudden the sky opens up and it's pouring...so we hightail it home and drive to get our coffee. Long story short...we only did about 7.2 miles and have no idea what our time was because of the ranger incident.

Jeanne I had a visual of this ranger being one of those survivalists types looking like he is wearing his daddy's his camo suit and guns and knives all over him.::cop: And John snickering while you chewed him up and spit him out. Did he get back on his rat and ride off into the sunrise after you told him where he could stick his rules.:p

Good morning everyone, we are above freezing today and not any storms due today so life is good.

I'm going to do some easy walking at the mall this morning while I wait for Erica to get off. I will of course stretch good first.

Why do the icons on the side keep changing positions? There are new things I've never seen before, or is it just that I'm not very observent?

Walking Panda:wave2:

Walking panda.....I was wondering the same thing! They are moving....it's a mystery to me!

Jeanne: What is it with the golf courses?? They are very protective aren't they? If no one is golfing yet, what's the harm? You are just using the paths and minding your own business! Give'em h___ Jeanne!

Do you ever notice that the people driving everywhere, parking closest to the store, etc, are the meanest on the road? I was running yesterday, and about 20 cars go streaming past me at high rates of speed, oblivious to their surroundings (((me for example!)))). Do you know why???? :drive: They were late for church! I think God will forgive them if they are a few minutes late, but probably would have a problem killing me in the process. I wondered what the heck was going on, I thought there was a fire somewhere. One car actually took the corner to the church on two wheels because they were going so fast. I usually loop around the church into their parking lot to extend my run, but not yesterday! The people were just to mean to get near!:rolleyes2

I'll try to remember to stay away from there at the 5:00 service time. Nothing like getting squeezed off the road by flying cars!:crowded: It was like running on the track at Indy during the 500!

Beth

I think some drivers fear us because we represent what they should be doing and they block us out. I have been nearly hit many many times. Ours is not a walker, runner or bike friendly town. Few sidewalks, even fewer shoulders on the side of the road and lots of traffic since the town has grown faster than the roads. A lot of the surrounding area comes here for work in the factories so we have a bad rush hour traffic problem.

I managed 2.5 mies of easy walking today.

Over 2 feet of new snow here :cold: And it is still snowing:(

Ski resorts are supposed to get up to 4 ft of new snow from this storm. Even the valleys of Reno and Carson City are getting near a ft

Supposed to clear up tomorrow and into next weekend. Packing up stuff and getting ready to bring to our new condo next weekend. Looking forward to be able to walk outside without snow :thumbsup2

This snow really limits my rehab. Oh well in 4 weeks I won't have to worry about that for a little while. :sad2: It sucks that my last 4 weeks of being able to get out I can't. It will be 3-4 months before I get back to the sad level I am at now!

Dave: You will be back up to par soon:)

I worry more about endurance than speed. If you don't get tired, you can keep your pace up. If you get tired, your pace will drop and continue to drop. I found at the Goofy, I am able to pickup the pace and than back off and stay consistent. Only a few of us can do 6 m/hr walking.

Good job to all.

Robert I miss ya buddy, we need to get over this injury crap and get healed up and get on with the fun. So many fun races and so much good beer and so little time.

How about the rest of you anyone else ready to party at the mouse house????

Beth, I am so sorry - we Christians have no excuse for acting like jerks or endangering another. I do apologize for my brothers and sisters in Christ. :guilty:

Dave, it was great that you were able to get a walk in! :thumbsup2
Robert :grouphug: You are so right on yours & Dave's awesome walking speed, but we are willing :cheer2:

They tell us another snow storm is on the way

A friend mentioned she was thinking about joining a health club to have access to equipment to use that would be expensive to purchase.

Actually I feel that there is a more important reason than that to join a health club. When you have to dress and go there then you will do stuff when you get there. When you just have stuff at home it's to easy to find anything else to do and keep putting it off.

The important thing about a cub is you HAVE TO MAKE IT A ROUTINE. Go at the same time everyday. For me that's get up have some cereal and coffee, post on the WISH then at 7am it's time to go to the gym.

Good morning everyone, have an awesome day and wish me luck on my test walk today. I'm doing 4 miles to see how my achillies will act.

Good luck on your walk, Walker Panda!

Very windy again here, and it is supposed to snow this afternoon! I may be doing my exercise indoors today. Scot and I both got out yesterday for good walk and run.

Lynn isn't wonderfull to have a spouse to share your fitness adventures. Erica and I can't wait to see you guys again. But we have to wait till ToT, since the May trip is not in the budget. But next year we are hoping to make 3 trips.

Hanging with our WISH buds is the best. It's our reward for staying on track.

Dave: A differing point from a "DINK". I find it easier to get up and hop on my treadmill or recumbant bike at home than it is to get ready, drive, etc to go over to the pool or gym.

That's just my opinion. Especially living in a Winter climate. If I didn't have this at home, I wouldn't work out.

That's so you don't have to dress to workout, you shameless barbarian! Most civilized folk at least slip on the red spandex.:upsidedow

You and the Scott H. family are rare cases since you have to brave the frigid temps and snow covered roads.:scared:

I did my 4 miles today. For the first mile I had some minor discomfort then after I wamed up I was walking without any pain at all. Of course this was just about a 15 to 16 min per mile pace and just brisk walking and not racewalking but it's a start.:cool1:

Tomorrow I'll do some more but I'm waiting for a couple of weeks to add any speed training. The week after next I'll start trying to racewalk again.

Question for the serious walkers:
I'm still on the fence about which event to sign up for next year and since the rates are going up at the end of this week, I need to make a decision soon.

Here's my dilemma....I would LOVE to do the full again. The event was a very positive experience for me throughout. In many ways it was much easier than the very long walks that I did towards the end of training. It was my first full and so I had no idea how I would perform or how I would feel. I went into the event with a ton of training and a very big "can-do" attitude because I REALLY REALLY wanted to prove something to myself. The problem I'm having now is that the thought of all that training is not very appealing right now. I pretty much followed JB's plan to the letter because I was afraid not to. Unfortunately the heaviest training sessions were right around the holidays which can be a fairly stressful time anyway. If I have a half marathon scheduled for November and another half in early December, do you think I could get by with a little less training otherwise? I would still plan to do a 16, 18, and 20-miler at the end, but may lighten up on some of the shorter intensity walks. On the plus side, I've done it before so the fear is gone. On the down side, I've done it before so perhaps the drive is diminished? What say all you walking pros who have numerous full marathons and other spectacular achievements under your belt?

Jeanne I think that the half marathons are not going to have the same satisfaction for you anymore. They are fun and good training but unless you go into them hunting a PR, you are going to come to the finish feeling like it's not enough.:hyper:

You had to build a base last year and you did, it doesn't take as much to maintain as to build from scratch.

Just my humble opinion.:goodvibes
