New USA travel announcement

In all honesty, and I mean this is the nicest possible way, my reason for traveling is no one's business. It's not in my nature to question someone else's choices if they're following the RULES. I have no issues with complying and following every rule the government puts forth. As someone, who has created a business out of traveling, I welcome testing. My business will eventually be gone if travel doesn't take off again. If the USA requires visitors to quarantine I will change the dates.
Unfortunately, the vast majority don't think about how any of this is affecting small business owners. And I've found that as a business owner, if I mention how I wish restrictions would be lifted so we can attempt to survive, then I am labeled as selfish and greedy bc it means I apparently only care about myself.

Because people aren’t following rules. People are going places and they are having visitors over. If people have to quarantine in a hotel they can’t do either.

That's fair. Unfortunately, I think those who want to flaunt the rules will find a way, regardless. But if a hotel can make it more difficult for them to do that, I'm all for it!

They aren’t talking about people just checking into any hotel. They are talking about a hotel specifically for quarantine. They wouldn’t be allowed to leave. If they do they could face huge fines and jail time.

Actually people do think about this. But most people value human lives above a business. And when it’s gotten to the point where hospitals are having to send patients hours away just to have a bed, there is a problem. And the lockdown is starting to work. We saw it work in April and it’s slowly working now.

I don't disagree that it's a problem. But putting people out of business and out of jobs is a problem too. Especially in the numbers that are occurring. Its possible to be concerned about more than one thing at a time. I can think that hospitals being overwhelmed is a problem AND think that the huge number of people who are losing their jobs or their entire livelihoods is a problem and that doesn't make me a bad person. In fact, its perfectly normal for me to be scared that we might lose our home due to this and if I wasn't worried about that or what that would mean for my kids, there would be something wrong with me.

I was responding to your comment that the majority don’t think about how this affects businesses. You are the one saying that people who are in favour of the lockdown don’t care about businesses. My point was they can have concern for both but realize something had to be done. Nobody said you were a bad person.

Not on here no. But other places, I've gotten bombarded with comments about how I'm a horrible person. What really kills me tho, is that where I live no one wears a mask even tho it's mandated. Like, literally, I went to the chiropractor today and I was the only person there, including the staff, wearing a mask. No one wants to get the vaccine because "I'm not gonna be a guinea pig" and then they call me selfish. I'm incredibly frustrated today, and apparently it's making me snippy. I apologize. I'm just over all of this.

I'm VERY curious how this will be enforced and to what extent. Especially in Florida. The governor of Florida is ALL about keeping things open and not forcing many restrictions.

You need to report them. I realize we're talking about harming a business in a discussion about businesses suffering at the moment, but this is not OK.

EDIT: spelling

There isn't any way for the authorities to enforce it tho and they don't care to. In our state, its a county by county thing. So there is no "law" to enforce and since it's not being forced by the state, the conservative counties around here aren't enforcing it.

Honest question: why do you think quarantining in a hotel is better than at home? I feel like a hotel could potentially increase exposure rate (front desk, room service staff, etc.) While at home, it's just my immediate household. Groceries can be delivered, etc.

It may also become enough of a financial hardship (to quarantine for 2 weeks at your own expense) that people will reconsider travel. Also they would be able to require that the hotel be within a certain distance from your port of entry (Montreal, Toronto or Calgary)

I feel your pain as a business owner. All the more reason to get everyone on board with stopping this virus in its tracks so that you are able to open up again. I can't help but think that if there had been a total lockdown (not piecemeal) that the virus would have had nowhere to go.

I'm not certain if you're aware this thread is discussing the situation in Canada. I'm sorry that you're not getting any support from your local authorities. I hope things will change soon south of the border so that we can all return to a favourite place to holiday.

As someone that works for the U.S. Army overseas this is killing me right now. I really regret taking this assignment. I have aging parents, have lost an Uncle to this since I’ve been here, and both my Sis and and two Aunts have had it. I’m terrified I won’t be able to get back if there is an emergency.

Even though we came here prior to the mass breakout, I had huge second thoughts and kick myself every day.

Ok. This is a Canadian thread. Now your complaining about businesses makes a bit more sense. I think businesses here are getting way more support when they have to close then in the US. Also we take how our health system is doing a lot more serious I think.

The chiropractor staff was not masked?

Oh sorry. Didn't realize you weren't Canadian. It would be a MAJOR issue if that was happening in Canada.

He also hinted at the possibility that upon return to Canada, quarantine will be mandatory in a hotel instead of at home. He said it's a "possibility they are exploring."
Hmmmm, I wonder if they will make me quarantine in a different Hotel from my wife and kids? Now that would be a vacation....I mean oh no whatever would I do without them just spending 2 weeks in quiet solitude.

A follow-up for those who didn't watch/listen to the PM's conference today, here's his most recent FB post.

When he made a similar post in March it was only days before then said "Come home now" and the borders were then closed. Not sure what this will mean but I would be cancelling a trip if i had one booked right now.

NOT wanting to come across as attacking anyone who has plans, is thinking about making plans or already travelling, just got back ... just sharing the FB post

If the Government of Canada will pay me back and refund me for me trip, I'd happily cancel. We purchased our DVC points and booked this pre-pandemic. We've already been told we will not get our money back. Easier said than done to just cancel, as the Prime Minster has stated he wants us to do.

My only hope now is we will be able to possibly trade those purchased points to RCI?! I've recently read Disney has some sort of partnership with them. I don't even want to go anymore, as much as I love the idea of it.

It's funny and ironic to see Trudeau post that all while I see Atlantis Paradise Island commercials all over the TV telling us to come back and travel....!

I am not familiar with DVC, but there's no recourse to getting your money back given the ongoing situation? You would think there would be some leeway.

What additional supports are being provided in Canada to small businesses? I am incredibly curious because my SIL is a small business owner in Ontario and is woefully concerned about her viability during the extended lock down. I haven't heard of any stimulus payments being issued to Canadian taxpayers, either.....we here in the US have received two.

And what do you base your comment on the strength of your health care system? Opinion? Media reports? I know our state took their health care system VERY seriously when the pandemic hit, going as far as securing two multi-million dollar sites to serve as Covid care centers in the event that hospitals reached capacity. That never happened.....one site treated a total of 8 patients before being shuttered months before the lease was up, the other saw no patients at all. I live in a metro urban area, and none of our local hospitals have reached capacity and several condensed their covid units to specific locations so the unused, under-utilized facilities could serve other medical issues. I follow my local hometown Ontario hospital on Facebook (and know 3 nurses personally who work there) and based on their posts and reports, they are struggling far more than we are here. I don't doubt that some areas like New York City and parts of California may be facing the issues you are describing, but this is absolutely not the case throughout the entire USA as you suggest, despite what the media would like you to believe.
