So, Pooh_Girl and Groucho (or anyone else who knows) let me ask you this. This 50mm f/1.4 lens is fixed 50mm and it is designed to work really well in low light?? Is there more to this or is this all. I googled it and it looks like from what I am reading this is the main purpose of the lens. Which interest me because this is one of the reason we bought a SLR for better low light pics. Thanks!

It is also a very good portrait lens. I have had it for about a year and have been very impressed.

As Kevin said, it's also a good portrait lens, but what I REALLY like about it (other than the already stated GREAT low lite pics) is that this is the one we go to when we want to explore depth of field a lot more. I don't know why, but I seem to love doing that with this lens. I guess you can do it with all of them, but this is my favorite. There's a reason everyone calls this the PRIME lens.

The 50mm is going to be much better in low light, but also will produce generally better photos than the kit and/or 50-200mm or 50-300mm. It's optically a very high-quality lens and will have superior sharpness, color, and nicer bokeh (the out-of-focus parts of your image) than all but the most high-end zoom lenses.

Not to say that the kit zooms are low-quality at all, but the 50mm is just playing on a different level. Plus it's small and light, so it's easy to bring along.
