new to Uber

We will be in Orlando soon and would like to visit one of the character warehouses. I have done fare estimates for a taxi and for Uber and it seems like Uber will be half the price (approx 8 dollars from Coronado to Orlando Prime Outlets using Uber)
I have never used Uber before! I know I have to download the app and register a credit card, but what else should I know?
Does it need to be set up ahead of time, or can I request a ride minutes beforehand?
Will the app (or driver?) give me a price estimate before going on the trip? I don't want any surprise fees.
Is it safe to use alone? It seems weird to ride with a stranger in their car.

I used uber for the first time on our recent trip to very beach. You should download the app and set up your account in advance. Google for some coupon codes -I found one for $22 off our first ride which was perfect since it was for a $25 ride to the airport!

You don't reserve in advance...just request the ride when you're ready to go. They will give you an estimated wait time and there's a button to get a fare estimate before you schedule the ride. Once you schedule the ride, you'll see the name of the driver, their picture, make & model of their car. You'll be able to track where your driver is as they approach.

I had the same concerns about safety but the drivers are vetted and in my mind really no different than getting in a cab..they are strangers too.

The only fees are a $5 cancellation fee if the driver can't find you within 5 minutes of arrival, and damage fees if you damage the car, such as spilling a drink on the seat. The other think to watch for is surge pricing, which can happen during particularly busy times. I think the app will warn you if surge is in effect.

The fare depends on the size of the vehicle you request, not the number of riders in the group. UberX are mostly small sedans,like Honda Civics, and can hold up to 4 riders. UberXL can hold 6 and costs about 80% more. You also might need UberXL with just 4 riders if you have a lot of luggage.
