Hi! My name is Jessica and I've been surfing this forum for quite some time now as a Disney fan but now I have a new goal... to run the 2011 Disney Half Marathon in January. I've never been a runner. As a matter of fact, when I gave birth to my son in July 2007, I was 268lbs. I vowed to lose 100lbs by his first birthday and I did it in 11 months. About 7 months into my plan, I started doing the couch to 5K program to help me with the weight loss. I really learned to enjoy running. I gave birth to my daughter in October 2009 and I'm starting all over on the running thing. I just signed up for my first 10K the first weekend of June and am on week 3 of a 13 week program. One of my friends went from never running to training for a marathon and did her first marathon at Disney. What an awesome goal and accomplishment!!! We were planning a family trip in December but now I feel in my heart I want to move it to January in time for the half. Basically, I'm confused as to what you guys have going on here... I would really like the support and motivation and if anyone can point me in the right direction and give me some pointers, I'd really appreciate it!!!

The Disney races are wonderful because the support is awesome and they have a generous time limit so you can walk the whole thing if you want or walk/run or run. I'm a walker so I like the generous time limits so if I feel like taking it easy and enjoying to company of the other walkers I can.

Best Not to plan a time goal for a Disney race because you will want to be taking pics and enjoying the character support. Also it can be crowded in the first few miles so best to just flow with it and enjoy the view.

Check out one of the Teams and jump right in, everyone is awesome friendly, the new Incredibles Team is going strong and would, I'm sure, welcome you with hugs, support and good fellowship.

Welcome to W.I.S.H, Jessica! It's understandable to feel overwhelmed with your new goal and being new to the boards.

One of the first things you can do is go to this thread - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2381210 - and ask to be put on a team. Maura will add you to a team where you can get to know a smaller group of people who have been where you are.

This post is a good place to find out more info about W.I.S.H - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1831900, and this has tons of information about walking and running - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1187184.

Then, just start browing this board. You will see lots of questions and answers, and you can also ask your own questions and get lots of suggestions and advice. Feel free to jump right in whenever you want to. Everyone is super helpful and friendly here. Enjoy your journey!

Welcome to the WISH Team! You will be having such fun here while training for your January half.

My first recommendation is to make the commitment and register for the half. The event closes out and you don't want to lose your opportunity to register. That will be quite an exciting thing to do. I remember doing my first registration for WDW half (my first half). I was terrified. WISH really made all the difference.

Join in on the monthly thread and any thread to get to know WISH Team members. That way you will be allowing many of us to relive our first experiences and also share in the training, good and bad. The more you post, the more you will learn of the WISH spirit and find that it does work by sharing your training experiences.

All of us rely on each other to get it done! Come often post lots!
