Hello!

We're trying to get into pin trading...and I've never traded pins at DLR.

Is there a list of where pin trading books are (which stores) so we know where to start?

I know you can go up to any CM w/a lanyard and ask to see if they will trade...but is there more to it? Can someone explain the etiquette of pin trading w/CMs?

Thanks!

we never trade as we collect we have many pins dating back to my first trip in 1988, but i always see one right when you enter frontierland on the right hand side usally on the barrels in front of the shop, hope that helps some.

In DLR/DCA the books are only put out at the pin store in Frontierland. You can check with them for times.

CM's with lanyards will trade with you as long as they don't already have the pin you are giving them on their lanyard. And, in some cases they will still trade with you. :) Simply approach the CM and ask to see their pins, if you see something you'd like to trade let them know and make the trade. If the CM is wearing a teal lanyard it is only for kids 12 and under. The rule is also 2 pins per person, I've had some managers try to say it's 2 per family (usually when they are in a hurry but if they are in a hurry they should put their pins away IMO) but that's not correct at all, it's 2 per person. Let me know if you have any other questions, we all enjoy pin trading very much. :)

In addition to what the PP said, On Saturdays, at selected times, The Emporium on main street will have a few small cork boards with trader pins ... just go in there and ask a CM and they'll let you know when they're available. :thumbsup2

Not the OP, but do CMs get pins from Disney to trade? Or all the pins just from other pin traders? My DD has done limited trading at DL; I don't see much variety in the pins. But then again, we're just hitting the attraction CMs and not the store CMs.

The pins on the lanyards in the morning are normally "new" pins for each lanyard. What they do is go through them when the CM's shifts are over and they change out the pins. Then another CM takes that lanyard for a different shift with (hopefully) different pins. Of course it doesn't always work that, I've seen a CM simply take a lanyard from an existing CM before. And of course, throughout the day the pins get traded so you will pins that other guests have traded to the CM on their lanyard.

So I guess the best bet would be to trade earlier in the day as the pins will more likely be from Disney rather than other traders, right?

Not necessarily. It depends on where the lanyard came from. It could be one that a specific CM just refreshed at the start of their midday shift.

Thanks for all the responses!

Question about the AP holders pins which will be released soon...where are those usually sold (if any one knows)?

TIA!

This is how our family got started. We read these two websites and then we just found more and it goes on and on until you have more then one lanyard! And you are buying $30 sets because you just have to trade more pins! More pins!!! :lmao: When in reality you can go on ebay and get "trading" pins. Like I said the pin sets can be as much as $30 and you don't get that many pins. On ebay you get a "Lot" of pins for a buy it now price. Just make sure you email the trader and ask the right questions. Which you will learn what to ask from the two links I gave you. You want to make sure they are trade able. I believe they have to have the Disneyland trademark on the back. But it's been awhile! Then the books might tell you what ones are worth money or "valuable" I should say.
I choose to have a theme to my pins. I collect pins for each of the girls first Disney movie that they loved. So Lion King, Jungle book, Dumbo and Toy story. We usually go for my Birthday so a birthday pin and then the year. Usually those are the ones I get from the cast members. Then depending on how long you are there for the cast members may get a special set that week and you can try and find all of those. It's lots of fun! This year our 3 and 4th daughter get their lanyards! They are very excited!
Good luck and welcome you to a very fun addiction!

I usually get the AP or Disney Visa pins from the pin store in Frontierland. They will have them other places but you will have to ask, I also buy mine at the little pin store in NOS.

This is a mix of good info and perhaps bad. Buying pins on eBay can be very bad if you don't have a touch of guidance. There are many eBay sellers who sell "scrappers" which are pins that Disney did not approve of and they should have been destroyed, or scrapped. Someone scoops them up (or buys the old or badly made molds) and sells them on eBay for pennies on the dollar. these should be avoided at all costs and there is a very big but helpful thread on the Collector's Board, the link to reach this thread is in my signature. :) CM's are not given a new set per week, the pins are released in "waves" but not a week at a time, it used to be there was a new set per month but now they release 12 sets per year instead. They will release them at the beginning of the year and then you search for them all year, or until you find them all. I suggest odpt.com for looking for pins, that is the Official Disney Pin Trading website. :)

I am glad to see this thread! I may try my hand at trading a few pins when we go and I like the tips! :D

It always starts with "a few pins" and then.......LOL Seriously, it is addicting because it's fun. :)

We're kicking ourselves for not getting into pin trading earlier!!! We went on a Dream cruise this year, and now we're so sad that we didn't participate in the officer trading. We came back from Aulani and at Aulani finally thought, how stupid are we not to buy pins for each of the destinations!

So we've started with some Aulani pins, Dream cruise pins and we visited the pin store in NOS last week and found those beautiful Tinkerbell Cameo birthday pins. I also bought some of those mystery pins along w/our Cameo pins to trade...which is why I posted this thread. :thumbsup2

We haven't even traded yet and I'm addicted already.

Do you have any tips on how to avoid accidentally trading for those scrapper or fake pins? I looked on dizpins.com already, and honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference while I'm standing there ... :rolleyes1 Are scrapper pins pretty obvious?

I second the eBay pins - you can get pins for about $.60 each, and there are both US and international sellers.

my youngest has seriously gotten into pin trading. For her it is more of a fun thing. To look at the lanyards and trade. However, I am getting tiered of paying 8. for a pin and then she happily trades them for these tiny pins off of the lanyards. Where can I safely buy some bulk pins for her to trade?

Ebay, lots of cheap pins there. Kids grew out of the trading but they still pick up some each year.

We try to go to the Disney outlet and buy a few "Starter" packs just for trading. My DS always makes his first stop of the day @ Guest Services, they have books of pins for trading. I also suggest sticking with a theme or a set you would like to complete, it makes the hunt more fun.

90% of the bulk pins sold on e bay are fakes or scrappers

i do not recommend buying them

if a seller is shipping from china you can bet 99.9% of the time the pins are fake.
