We are not DVC owners. Congrats to those who own.
In 2015 - I know that is a long way off - since DVC rentals seem to be done 6 - 11 months in advance.

BC standard room for a week is $3187.50 (with mousekeeping service)
I am OK with cleaning up for ourselves.

I poked at the rental board and someone said they had BC DVC points to rent at $12.50 a point.
A BC DVC studio in 2014 cost 120 points and at $12.50 a point, total cost would be $1500. 1/2 the amount of a room in the BC resort.

Is the BC DVC studio smaller. less sq ft, than a standard room in the BC?

How does a rental work? Is it always secure ?
Thank you for your help

I am not sure of the room size difference but the studios do have mini frig, toaster, microwave and coffee pot. Yes the rental rates are much cheaper then booking direct most renters want full payment a certain time before the trip and it is all non refundable due to point usage and losing the points possibly if you cancel. Have you looked at David's rentals? They charge 14.00 a point (still better then direct) and they are very reputable. Most on the rent trade board are reputable also just do your do diligence when renting. Never send money via western union and if something does not seem right do not do it - ask a lot of questions! Good luck!

some negatives:

- BCV studios have 1 queen bed and 1 pullout sofabed (works great for couples but suboptimal if someone has to sleep on a sofabed.)

- DVC points stays do not include daily mousekeeping - for stays of a week or less, you get one trash and towel service and that's it. (some of us like not having mousekeeping in the villa.)

- there is typically no cancellation option for a points rental. if you can't make it, you cannot get your money back. (the owner may try to work with you but even their options may be limited.)

-you are not dealing with disney directly, and while there have only been rare instances of fraud, miscommunication is a possibility.

it's a great deal for staying in onsite resorts in great locations...but there can be trade-offs.

Is it always secure, no. Are the chances that it will be secure, very likely.

Nothing is 100%, your reservation belongs to the member until you check in.

Educate yourself and if uncomfortable book with a broker, as they do a good job of knowing who they are using to rent the points.

As to the no cancellation, think of it is priceline.

I rented my points once to a nice family and while they were there, a rare hurricane type occurrence and one of the few times I read the parks were closed. Not my fault, not theirs, bad luck, but no refund.

I have rented my points many times with no problems, but I am sure they happen

Be sure to use good judgement and feel comfortable with the owner prior to sending any money. If you rent from an individual here on the board, be sure that it is YOU that makes first contact with the owner, and it not someone that cold contacts yo via PM. In other words, if someone contacts you with "Hi, I see you're looking for DVC points by a post you've made, I have them for you at a good price." And you have not posted in to a thread they started on the Rent/Trade board, RUN!

As you get close to the 11 month booking window for your travel dates, reply into a Points for Rent thread that is offing BCV points.

Many first time renters use a rental broker, like our Rent/Trade board advertiser, David's DVC Rentals it is slightly more expensive, but David will hold 1/2 of your payment until after you check-in to the resort, that lessens the risk to you of an unscrupulous owner cancelling your reservation.

As other have said, we have had very few problems with rentals on our DVC Rent/Trade board, but there have been a few instances. In most of those cases, someone did business with a cold contact. But nothing on a rental is 100% safe, and there are risks for both the renter and owner.

We also encourage you to check out their prior posts using our board search engine. This way,you can see how often they are on the DIS, and the overall tone of their posts.

Davids rentals looks great - thank you - It is nice even it is $2 more than other offers - the idea of having a "broker" is great and seems more secure.

We go either mid May ...May 10 - May 20 or mid October 10 - 20 ...
not normally bad weather, and we never cancel.

We can not wait to be able to stay in a deluxe at a less expensive price.
BC has always been our dream, but not affordable.

The best we could do is the Dolphin next door.

Thank you for the web-site.
