We're new to DVC, have the paperwork but haven't mailed it in yet. Trying to sort out how all of this works. I was just looking at the "resource" sticky that lists the dedicated room sizes at the various resorts and noticed that not too many of them list one bedrooms. One of the reasons we want to join DVC is to have separate space from our kids, so we don't want to stay in studios. But the 2 bedrooms obviously use up a lot of points and we don't really need them. Is it difficult to get one bedrooms at many of the resorts?

All of the DVC resorts have 1 bedrooms, so I'm not sure what you're looking at.

I noticed know your note says "dedicated." A dedicated 1 BR would be one that couldn't be used as a 2 BR by connecting it to the studio next door.

Most (as far as I know, but never checked how many) 1 BRs are not dedicated, but have a connecting door allowing them to be connected to a studio so it can be reserved as a 2 BR.

Not all of the DVC resorts have "dedicated" 1BR villas, but all have 1BRs and they are readily available at your home resort 11 months ahead (and also usually within 7 months).

Some 2BRs are "lock-offs" - consisting of a 1BR and connecting Studio. Those are the villas made available as Studios and 1BR at all DVC resorts (even those with dedicated Studios and 1BRs).

Lock-off 1BRs will have a door that connects to the adjacent Studio but that will be locked from both sides when used as a 1BR and Studio.

As the other posters have stated not all of the resorts have dedicated 1 BRs.

All of the 1 BRs at BLT are lockoffs. There's really no problem having a lockoff at BLT because the connecting locked door to the studio is not in the living room so the sound from the other unit doesn't carry to your villa. We stored our cooler and suitcases in front of the door. I think that space might even work for a pack 'n play.

VGC shows 0 studios + 0 1 bedrooms. However, there are 23 lockoff 2 bedrooms. Those are actually 23 studios + 23 1 bedrooms. They could be reserved separately or together as a 2 bedroom. They also have 23 dedicated 2 bedrooms. Usually what they do when someone calls for a 2 bedroom is they reserve those dedicated first. When someone calls for a studio or 1 bedroom, they break a lockoff if available.

My experience is that it's easier to get 1 BRs than it is to get studios. There've been several times when I've tried to get a studio (on solo trips), only to be told that there are no studios available but there are 1 BRs. Someone told me once that it may be because both 1 BRs and studios have the same occupancy limit (except Kidani, I think) so more families of 3-4 go for fewer points.

Ah-hah! That clears it up. Thanks for your input, everyone! I was thinking "dedicated" meant reserved for DVC members versus people paying for the room. Glad to hear one-bedrooms are usually available. Looking forward to learning more as we go!
