New to Boy Toddlerdom - Whats the Difference between Hotwheels and Matchbox?

My son's daycare has the very simple round track that has one bump in it and and tunnel, but it is very compact which is key in our house. Does anyone know if there are any sets out there like this anymore? All I can find for sale are those elaborate car washes (for which the assembly scares me) and tiny Hero City pieces that fit into a bigger system that I just can't figure out. I just want a simple track for him to start off with to run his cars on.

Any ideas - maybe not Matchbox or HotWheels? I am getting desperate here.

And also, sometimes it is more fun to place them in a row, separated by style, design and color than it is to actually play with them.

DS loves his

OMG My DS does this and gets so mad at little brother when he comes by and "accidently" kicks them

Hot Wheels ROCK! Yep, I'm one of the few female members of the Hot Wheels Red Line Club - I collect them and played with them as a child. (well back then it didn't matter what brand ;) )

Hot Wheels does a few "real" cars but the majority are fantasy vehicles. Matchbox sticks with reality.

They both cost the same price but Hot Wheels are actually geared towards adult collectors as well as the children that play with them. You'll see a lot of series in the Hot Wheels line - this years "First Edition" series (brand new casts) contains 101 new designs - 100 you could buy in a store and one that you had to jump through hoops with UPCs for :)

I find Hot Wheels a little better made myself (although they are both owned by the same company) So I would recommend that if your DS wants to play "city" or "rescue" or any real life situation, get him Matchbox - if he wants to play "race" or "fantasy" type games, go with Hot Wheels.

I would suggest that if you go with the Hot Wheels and see he favors a certain car - to surprise him when he is grown, buy an extra of it and keep it mint in package hidden from him. I bet it will bring back so many happy memories for him and for less than a dollar! :)

Have you looked at the Darda cars? My boys haven't played with their Matchboxes or Hot Wheels at home (they still travel in pockets!) since they got the Darda track. It's a little more expensive, though. I like it because the track can be as simple or as complicated as the builder wants.

Mom of 2 boys - I prefer the Matchbox "stuff" over Hotwheels. We have a Matchbox carwash and a construction site. They are much sturdier than our Hotwheels stuff, which is all in little pieces, most of it broken in a big plastic bin.

As for the cars.........we always buy Hotwheels. I don't really know why.
