New Stroller Regulations on AA

I saw this on the DIS and realized that it may impact some people traveling with children with disabilities. The new rules states that if a stroller cannot fold compactly or is over 20 lbs, it cannot be gate checked.

I know a lot of people use larger strollers or special needs strollers for children with disabilities. I know a lot of people, including airline employees may not recognize the difference between a regular stroller and a special need stroller, so this may begin to cause problems with some people.

I am not sure how AA wants this handled, but I would let the airline know that you will be gate checking a stroller that is used as a wheelchair. Perhaps even a doctors note explaining that you need the stroller all the way to the gate.

If the stroller folds and weighs less than 20 lbs, you should be all set.

Just wanted to give people a heads up.

In one of the many threads on this, someone did call AA about the new rules. They were told that you can contact AA before your flight and have it noted that the stroller was being used for a disability. If they agent didn't know what you were talking about, then you should ask to speak to a supervisor.

Don't know what they would then do at the airport as no one has dealt with it in person that has reported back.

I am the one that called AA and posted a week or so ago. I later thought to call back and ask what to do once at the airport and was told to go directly to the ticket counter and let them know that we are there with the stroller and they would call the gate and let them know that it was OK and we are one the way over. It will be interesting to see if anyone on this board uses this airline and uses a special stroller.
