New State Laws kick in today

Yep. Our sales tax goes up by 1% today -- in our county, that means a sales tax of 8%. That, and gasoline tax goes up 2 cents a gallon as well.

Georgia wasn't listed. I heard there's a Tennessee law (we live very close to TN) that will affect my kids now though (I didn't see it listed on that link). They're changing the child safety seat law. Kids 9 yo old younger or, I think, under 5' tall must ride in a car seat.

Yeah, Florida got the banned smoking in the workplace law... It's really upsetting a LOT of people, even a lot of the restaurant owners that now have to go smoke free. It's really a big mess!

The emerging online world seemed to cry out for regulation, and Indiana responded by requiring those who send spam — unsolicited e-mails sent to hundreds or sometimes thousands — to clearly identify the message as an advertisement or an adult-oriented ad.

I wish they'd tell us how to report this. I highly doubt this new law will work.

:earseek: Taxes on gasoline will go up in Maine (2.6 cents per gallon), and Washington state (5 cents), for instance. :earseek:

Wow!! That's a big jump.......guess I need to cut down on my driving

I saw that in the paper this morning. Funny thing is that I hadn't heard of any of them until today.

Here in NY, the new DWI limit goes into effect. Down from .10 to .08. It's one law I'm pretty agreeable with.

No smoking in restaurants! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ha! :teeth: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Oregon has been a non smoking state for a while now. ITS GREAT!!! I can remember the days when folks smoked in the workplace and it wasn't fun at all! Folks can breathe now. Can't smoke in resturants either. When I go out of state I forget that not all states are as "with it" as Oregon in considering others health by still allowing smoking. No need to remember to ask for "nonsmoking" when you eat out here. Folks were really upset when the law took effect, but the angst simmers down after awhile and everyone gets use to it.

I am so annoyed by that too!!! I suppose I should be glad that Franklin County will only be 6.75% but still... I was so mad when they allowed these taxes to go through and others failed

The only good law I am happy to hear about is that the alcohol limit changed from .10 to .08 as well today.

Yea for insurance coverage for mental illness in Hawaii! (though not my state)

I also heard another one on the news that limits medical residents' work weeks to 80 hours. It's about time! I never understood how this was a good thing. Everyone should be prepared to wait longer to be seen, but I wouldn't want to be treated by someone who has been on their feet for 20 hours anyway, and who hasn't had the time to study and learn how to take care of me. Those poor lawyers in that state will have fewer malpractice lawsuits due to fewer mistakes. Aw. :p

(80 hrs is still too much for that kind of work, IMO)

I wanna know what Calm shell I've been under the last 5 years. I thought the Sales tax was 6% in Columbus. Guess being from Mi and having 6% sales tax for years already it didn't phase me at register.

In Franklin County, it was 5.75% up until today Juli. It is now almost 7% (6.75%). We were one of the lowest tax rates in Ohio and still are, but that was quite a jump to go from almost 6 to almost 7 over night.

yep everyone must now in seatbelts.

the fine went up from $5 to $10  for adults.

Thanks Elaine. Yes It tottally is a big jump.
