My MIL lives in a condo the Indian River on Bouchelle Island (a barrier island) in New Smyrna Beach. As expected & as usual, she has evacuated to her boyfriends home in Edgewater -- just a couple of miles away. (The bridge is always closed to traffic anyway.)
His home however, is on Rt 1 -- which follows right along the Indian River. He's not on the river side of Rt 1 -- but rather across the street (thus not making it waterfront property --- like THAT's gonna matter).
Anyway, normally I don't COMPLETELY FREAK when a hurricane comes there way...but this time, I want them to LEAVE. Rt 1 floods under normal rain conditions. His home has been known to have some rain water enter under doors when they've had 8" rain from a tropical storm. Once during a lesser hurricane, the home across the street (on the Indian River) received $82,000 in damage when river flooding pushed it from it's foundation.
They are still repairing the $13,000 in damage from Charley when a tree fell in the roof & into the bedroom.
Tuesday they told us they would evacuate Thurs am to his son's home in GA. I just spoke with them tonight --- and they are still at his house in FL!
He doesn't have any plywood or storm shutters. But they sandbagged the doors.
