New security arrangements and Camera bags

DH (Mr CCT) here!

Here are a few snaps of mine with dSLR/Laptop/Camcorder and all wires/chargers/remotes/batteries etc. Still loads of room. My laptop is a 15.4" widescreen.

I will probably use the Compudaypack for everything during flights but round the parks I will use my Lowepro Slingshot 100 and let Mrs CCT carry the Compudaypack for everything else (drinks/raincoats/shopping).

Hi,
By putting camera, lens, and laptop in one bag won't you be over the 6kg weight limit?

Mick.

Normally your laptop can be weighed on its own, so long as it goes into a single bag, same for purses/handbags, at least that was my interpretation....:confused3 :confused3

P.S. 8Kg in Upper class, 6Kg in Economy/PE

hi everyone,

so i'm going to orlando next week with virgin and from reading this i have a bit of a problem. i will be there for an extended period so will be taking my laptop, camera and camcorder.
Last year i was able to take 2 carry ons (laptop and one other) but i guess from reading this that this has changed.
I just bought a new laptop case/bag which wont fit much else in it apart from the laptop.
So what should i do? i could fit my camcorder in my carry on and put my laptop (inside its bag) inside my suitcase? But airlines always say not to check in laptops.

any advice?

thanks

Anyone going with you?
Could they take it on as their carry on?
All major pieces into a rucksack, put the laptop Charger, camcorder charger etc into your luggage?
Putting your laptop and camcorder into standard luggage is not a good ides, first of all theaft, second damage.
You can buy meatl boxes to ship in holds.

EDIT,
Thinking about it and looking at my Lowepro bag, i reckon yuou would get your camcorder, camera and laptop into that.
have a look at the pictures above. You can get the bag urgently from Jessops?

thanks for the quick reply...
i'm going to be traveling alone, so won't be able to split it between someone else.
the bag from jessops looks a bit pricey for me. i'll see how much i can fit into the laptop bag before i make any decisions

If you are thinking of getting any bag/case from Jessops online or reserve and collect use the discount code BAGS20 for 20% off.

Just in addition to OWK's post, I have weighed the backpack with all that is in the photo and it is 6.6kg. That's with all the junk in it that could really go in the main suitcase (leads, chargers, batteries & remotes).

Probably brings it down about 5.5kg. Give me a mo and I will check.......

Ok, it brings it down to 5.4kg to be exact. I have a 15.4 widescreen laptop, Olympus E-400, 2 lens', JVC Everio camcorder and Canon Ixus camera all in.

I am really impressed with how comfortable this is on my back. The rear is very well padded and the carrying handle is also comfortable to use.

Just as a comparison, here is my Compudaypack and Slingshot 100 side-by-side.

Just caught up with this thread and the camera issue etc I should be able to cope with as 4 of us are travelling and we can share stuff out among the backpacks. BUT I've just read through the BAA guidelines and seen that liquids have to be in containers of less than 100ml. Does this include bottled water as we always take these on board to combat headaches and sickness ? I don't think you can get bottled water in ths small a size.

Yes it does Tony, but here's the thing, when you are through security, you are allowed to buy bottles of water to take on board so long as they stay unopened until you get on board.
I think some airlines are now also supplying water in bottles on board, I know that Virgin are to UC passengers, but am not sure about the rest.
To me this is just like going to a concert, they don't want you to bring in water as they can rip you off themselves!

We had no problems taking open bottles on board, any drink bought in the airport has been ok. In Virgin economy water and juice is available the whole flight, it is left in jugs for you to help yourself, I know becase we sit in row 48 right next to it and just pour some whenever we need it. They also left some large bottles with people who asked for them on last flight.

If anyone's interested there's an ebay shop called Sell n send based in Colorado. They have loads of Lowepro gear and are selling this bag on buy it now, in all colours, for $59.99 plus $29.99 international shipping. I think its a good deal and would have ordered one but my printer just died so that will have to come first I'm afraid!

hi again everyone,
so i just read this on the virgin website http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/passengerinformation/baggage/handbaggageuk.jsp

'Passengers departing from UK airports are permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage each.'
then it says...
'Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage.'
then it says...
'A laptop bag will be regarded as the one item that is allowed in the cabin.'

So to clarify... i can only take one bag, but i can take another bag aslong as it fits inside the other bag!?

Yes, that's correct. One item of hand baggage through security, you can have a seperate handbag, but for security it must go inside the one piece of hand luggage and that must be able to close.

Yes - as long as the second smaller bag fits within the first larger bag (and with one inside the other, they are still within the size requirements), that is fine.

You could have a laptop within a pouch type bag that fits within your slightly larger bag, that is still fine. What the Virgin website means is that you can't have one bag (full of things) AND a seperate laptop bag. If that makes sense... :)

just been reading through this thread and am having palpatations about when we go next year. We have just got a DSLR (Olympus e400 fab :) ) and now have to contend with taking that as well as the laptop and every other bit of tat we have to take on the plane with having to young kids.

we are looking for a camera bag at the moment and i think I'll show DH that one, although I think it mnight be a bit big for general keeping the camera in so might only think about getting one closer to the time we go away.

Mind you having to kids does mean we get 4 carry on bags, and the kids have one of those wheeled case things each (which are small enough to go onboard) so we can put their toys and a change of clothes each in them, then DH's laptop bag is an over the shoulder soft one, which will take the travel documents and ipods etc. then we can have the camera aswell.
