Here's my experience booking the grand gathering with a HA room:

Called at 11 mos from check-in day. Dates were for Sunday June 21 - Friday June 26, 2009. I booked a dedicated HA 2bedroom at SSR. No issues. Also booked 2 studios at SSR for the same dates. Only issue of note was that at the time I called (July 21) the member cash nights were not available for June 26. I called back a week later and reserved that night on cash for the dedicated 2bedroom. Also with a HA room and no availability issues.

Got it, CM actually said everything for 1 bedrooms was available (including concierge) at that time

On 7/21 (a few days into the 7 month window) I booked 1BR BWV Boardwalk View for Mon-Fri 2/16-20 (during President's week). I think 1BRs are generally easier to book. But I was really surprised Boardwalk View was available!!

Called today (8/8) approx 4 1/2 month window for December 19 and 20, 1 - bedroom VWL. December 20th available for points. December 19th available for cash rate (not for points).

Exactly what we wanted. I was really surprised VWL was available for that weekend. We wanted to go to the Very Merry Christmas Party on Dec 19th. Worked out great!

I called today right at the 7 month window to switch our march 8 thru march 15 ressie from SSR to AKV standard view. One 2-bedroom unit and one 1-bedroom unit sunday arrival. Had complete success which really surprised me especially when the CM asked what my second preference was. She was great too. Very friendly and helpful.
