Spoke to a CM last night about buying into DVC. New promo is we can by a minimal of 50 pts at SSR with 09 points free, making total of 100 pts. Total cost $4750 with 10% down if we choose to finance.

I ask about the drop in point amounts and he said it was due to economy. They need more members.

Should we do it??????????? We go on cruise or to parks once a year costing st least $3000 each trip or more.

Only you can answer that. What can you do with 100 points every other year? Will that be enough for your families accomodations? Check the points charts and find out.

The trips will still cost you $$$, all DVC is getting you is your accomodations.

You should look into resales as well. Prices on SSR are quite low. It may or may not suit you, but you owe it to yourself to at least look.

After that, you would have to borrow all or most of your points for 2010 to get your accomodations. I would say you'd want a minimum start up contract of at least 100 points if you plan on going every year- and even then, you'll have to do frequent borrowing to get into a resort.

Have you stayed at SSR? If not, you may want to read up on it. Although many like SSR, some do not like the vastness of the property and the bus system there.

If you like it there, great. I would recommend buying resale and choosing a use year that works for your typical travel times. You can buy more points for the same investment going resale which will translate into more days of vacation for you!

When comparing the financials, remember that you will pay closing costs on resale - approx 350 and up depending on size of contract.

I suggest that you take some time and read, read, read the DVC posts. This subject is discussed daily.

In the end only you can decide if a DVC ownership makes sense for your family.

SSR is $90 per point direct from DVC, or about $65 or so resale, but a little more if you only buy 50 points (with the limitations mentioned above).

The "free" 2009 points are simply the points you are buying -- nothing free. What DVC is doing is giving you an extension of the banking deadline so you can bank those points into 2010. Really more of a sales gimmick than a substantial benefit.

I'm also thinking of a 50 point buy in. It's only my seven-year-old daughter and I so a studio is all we need at this time in our lives. Our times of travel almost always fit perfectly in the Adventure or Choice seasons. Okay, actually I'm beyond the thinking part. We're going to be purchasing ours within the next ten days. (I already have a great guide, so don't start PMing me.)

I see many posts about how 50 points just isn't much but six days/five nights in a studio at AKL, BWV or OKW is the perfect vacation for many of us. My daughter could live at WDW but me? A week is my limit. I almost need a vacation from my vacation.

There are many people that will freely give you their opinion here but one opinion really matters...... yours !

Listen, read, research and know all you can about DVC and decide for yourself if buying 50 points is enough. Remember.... you can always add on if you need to or sell out if it's not right.

I'm new to this also and have a 100 point contract in ROFR right now. Most people think that wouldn't be enough for them, but I think it is perfect for my wife and I.

It definitely sounds like you are candidate to become a DVC member. However, you should research to see how you would use that 50 points per year. Bank one year (2009) borrow (2011) and use the current year (2010) will give you 150 points. So every three years you'll have 150 points, plus or so. Also if you read these boards you'll see that many do not consider using DVC points for anything other than a DVC room, a good value for your money.

You will find that a DVC trip will change the way you vacation at WDW. There is definitely a more resort feeling after we stayed at Values for so many years. You really just want to enjoy the hotel, pool and amenities. Also if you are 7 months away from the trip and book you can purchase a once a year allotment of up to 24 points direct for DVC for $15 per point. So if you had 50 points and every other year you book a trip at 7 months you could add 24 to it and have a better vacation--or more days.

Now this new " additional point purchase" may not last long but it is definiely an option. After your first trip, don't worry you will have add-on-itis after seeing how it changes things.

I did the 50 point buy in. My guide was great. She even secured exactly the reservation we want for our January trip. We're doing a weird split stay but that's for another forum. Thank you very much for the information about the extra 24 point allotment from Disney at $15 which may be needed some years.

The 2057 expiration date will mean that I will be 91 years old, my daughter will be 55... Who will help get the scooters on the buses? I am sure when my daughter gets older we will add points so that we can use larger accommodations but for now this is perfect.
