New Pirates with Jack - HATED IT!!

I want to take a friend on the POC ride next month but she is terrified of alot of things.. What is this ride really like--how bad is the drop? Thanks :dance3:

It's a baby drop. Like going down a hill in a car. They don't strap you in or anything. Very very mild. It's dark though when you go down which makes you think it's going to be worse than it is.

I wonder what everyone will think about the new "Rumors"! SUPPOSEDLY they are going to add Will and that nasty girl :furious: to the Pirates attraction! I really loved those movies but I'm sort of at a crossroads when it comes to the original and the new. I think they pretty much ruined the old attraction...there's hardly anything left! and if they bring in the others..there won't BE anything left. Yo Ho, Yo Ho! pirate: pirate: Helen

Who's the nasty girl? :confused3

The other thing, and my wife noticed this too, is that the overall dialogue volume was lower.

We could hear it fine...and several times we commented (not on Pirates but elsewhere) how unneccesarily LOUD all the attractions are. Maybe the majority of people are hard of hearing (or will be when they are done with WDW), but it's annoying that every ride and movie has to be done at maximum decibels.

Also the Yo Ho Yo Ho song was still everywhere...I love the movie theme and think they could have added it in more places then just the cannon scene. Overall the refurb was very well done.

Note that you don't see a new Eddie Murphy character at the Haunted Mansion - it is only because Johnny Depp created such a fantastic and popular character that Captain Jack eventually was added to the attraction. As Bicker would say, customer demand and all that.

She did when I rode on 10/27 and 10/29. Maybe that part wasn't working properly when you rode. :confused3

We were also there on the 29th. I don't remember hearing anything different and we hit it first thing around 11 am (we got to MK around 10 or 10:30 am).

something i dont think i heard when i rode it this past Oct. was the pirate saying "dead man tells no tales" or something along those lines. was that still there ? I thought that was pretty cool when you heard that and kinda creepy.

Yes, it was in the beginning but very low.

Actually, the wife still does come out and tell her husband to not be chicken.

That's funny, because we rode the ride 6 times back in August and it wasn't there. I guess its part of the ongoing tweaking of the ride...

I can't remember exactly WHEN they were made - either late 80s or sometime in the 90s I'd say, but they changed the section where the women of the town now chase the pirates. Now, I may need someone to correct my history a little bit here, because obviously this was awhile back and I was still a kid:

Originally, the men chased the women. Then, when it changed, the women chased the men. It was ridiculous to say the least.

It was sometime between 1992 and 1997.

I liked the Captain Jack changes, but I hated the "women chasing pirates" scene change (it was "pirates chasing wenches" the last time I was there; now, the scene is just STUPID). I don't think Jack takes away from the attraction at all. I didn't even find it very different.
Now, I do hope the rumors that they will be adding Elizabeth and Will are just that - rumors. I don't think they need to make the ride a total movie tie-in. That would be as bad as Eddie Murphy making an appearance in Gracie Mansion.

I really don't get people hating attractions and never wanting to ride them again just because they change a few things.
If they change a ride from something we like and enjoy to something we don't care for, why would we keep riding it? Our favorite Epcot attraction was the original Imagination ride. Once they changed it, we strongly disliked the new version. We rode it once and never rode it again. When they changed it the 2nd time, we tried it again and still didn't like it and haven't been on it since. There are more than enough things to keep us busy at WDW without wasting time on rides we don't like.

That's really an extreme circumstance and I agree with you. With Imagination, they completely tore out the ride, completely changed the storyline until NOTHING was left.

If you saw the second Pirates movie, miss. Swan would be the one to hate.
I guess I got too carried away with my opinion on a carachter! Sorry.

oh no! I loved the old Pirates and am not a fan of the movie so I'm probably going to be disappointed too. I still haven't been on the new version.

They really hardly changed anything. They've added Barbossa and the movie theme music to the cannon scene but as far as I could tell all the lines are the same in that part. And other than that they added three Jack Sparrow animatronics (only one of which has any lines at all) and changed maybe two or three lines of dialogue with the other characters to fit in with the Jack Sparrow theme. And I think even people who aren't fans of the movie would find the Davey Jones effect pretty cool. :thumbsup2

I'd be more concerned about the Will and Elizabeth rumors. I heard the same thing from a CM friend of mine who has ins with some of the imagineers.

On the PC changes: Originally the first two pirates were chasing the women. Then in the third grouping, the *large* woman was chasing the pirate. It was very funny, and has lost a lot IMHO by going PC where pirates don't "pillage and ravage and don't give a hoot."

Oh good! I thought I had imagined this was the way it was originally. I thought I remembered the larger woman chased the pirate, but wasn't sure if I had remixed history in my head or what.

That's funny, because I know that the wife came out and told Carlos not to be a chicken when we were there in August. She doesn't come out as often any more, though. It's a longer dialogue loop, I think.

I like the update. Many people were worried that Jack Sparrow and Barbosa were going to take over the entire attraction, and they didn't. I haven't been to DL so I can't judge their Pirates, but I never really followed the storyline in Pirates. I have heard about the Pirates storyline in DL ends with the pirates getting caught. But in WDW they end up with all the treasure. I still enjoy all of the pirates in POTC in WDW, and I enjoy the underlying storyline of Jack and the treasure. The definitely cleaned up the ride, and the audio seems to be much clearer. I think that sometimes people are so hung up on a ride being "classic" that they are afraid of it being changed. I mean, would you be upset if COP got a real refurbishment? If the characters got redone with the technology that made Jack Sparrow, would that be bad? Pirates is a great ride, and they did a great job of including characters from a movie without over doing it. There is still much of the classic feel of the ride, and a storyline that can be understood easier to younger kids that only really know the movie.

Very well put, jswalker.

I also agree that the refurbishment also brought a great deal of much-needed TLC to the attraction (fixing the AAs, upgrading the sound system, cleaning, repainting, etc.).

Yo ho was sung but far less prominently.

The skull and crossbones is gone. There is no warning before the drop now about "rough waters ahead."

Sorry for all you Johnny Depp fans (and I'm one too) but they gutted this attraction.

They did not gut the attraction. I think you're just blowing it all out of proportion.
