New pier and stairs to be put in Vero

We just returned from Vero last night. During the day they were bringing in fencing and a pile driver to put in new piers so they can rebuild the pier and stairs that was taken out when the huricanes hit Vero. They said it will take about 6-8 weeks to rebuild. They are rebuilding it a little different but it will be generally in the same location where the old pier was. They are closing the temporary stairs they put in where the old campfire was. Now you will have to walk all the way to the south end of the resort past the last Beach House to get to the beach. This is kind of a pain but they can't allow anyone near the construction until it is done. It should be nice after it is complete.

You know, I kept thinking I should have posted something on this when we came back in January. We were a little disappointed when we were there that there was no wheechair access yet, but were assured that they would be putting in the new pier in February. Of course it rained mostly during our visit so taking DS down to the beach was less appealing. They are on something of a tight schedule since it all has to be finished well before Turtle Season begins in the spring. So I'd expect most of it to be done by the end of this month.

They've done such a great job repairing things from the hurricanes. Things were already looking pretty good last month, but for the sparse vegetation. The trees still looked like someone had reached out of the sky and stripped their leaves off. But the buildings and all looked great.

Hmmm...about 7 weeks til our trip to Vero. It would be wonderful if they get it done by then! In any case, I'll take lots of pics of the new changes when we arrive.

I am so glad to hear this. There is nothing better than a nice dinner at Shutters followed by a walk with an after dinner drink to watch the ocean from the ramp/pier.

Thanks for the update. They had finally figured out a way to build the stairs that held up to the "regular" storms. Maybe they've come up with some ideas to help the entire structure. A little incovenience now should have big dividends later.

What's the story on the public beach next door? Is it back in operation? Especially interested in whether the lifeguard is there. All of their facilities were pretty much destroyed.

One of my favorite spots at vero was to sit on the bench on the old beach access, half way down the ramp at the turn. It was so nice to watch the stars and hear the ocean while peacefully sitting on that bench. I hope something like it comes back.

The public beach next door is still closed. Nothing is there and I mean nothing, no pier, no lifeguard, and no building. The parking lot, what is left of it, is even closed. It is difficult to walk north past the public beach because so much of the beach there is gone. Even at low tide there is only about 10 feet of beach. This is because of the seawall and they haven't brought any sand in. At Disney and South, the beach is wider than it was in the past because there is no seawall. Of course now that the beach is wider there, about 20 feet of the dunes are gone.
