New passport requirements for Americans

Was over at the Disney Cruise Line site last night and there's a message saying that all Americans must have a passport to travel on the cruise line December 31, 2006 and after. (I would think that this rule would apply to other cruise lines because it's a government edict of some sort.)

It should be interesting to watch how this, and the PASS thing will impact tourism and cross-border shopping.

Jim.

My Dad works for customs and he said that they are in the works for Canadians having something too, because the amount of $$ its going to cost to have everyone get passports. It will look like a Drivers licence that will allow you to cross the US border's and possibly Mexico too.

I can guarantee if we tried to do something like this the US would be all over us to put a stop to it.

I doubt that. With the exchange rate where it is now, US businesses stand to lose more from this requirement.

I love going to Canada, visiting Toronto, picking up a bunch of coffee crisps, but I wont be shelling out the $$ for a passport to do so. I think many businesses on both sides of the border realized, there are lot of folks, american and canadian who feel the same, and are pushing for a common solution.

The USA and Canada apparently will be working in tandem to produce passes for both countries to use (Canadians going to US and USA citizens coming to Canada). They are trying to fast track it to have it ready by the end of the year.

I prefer they stay the course with passports being required no not all families will want them but honestly I believe it is the best form of ID for people traveling to another country and it should be required for everyone. This is just my opinion mind you but it honestly makes sence for teh length of time a passport is valid and the minimal fee for that piece of mind it is well worth it.
