New passenger protection rules for airlines

We could have used these on our return from Cancun! FFS. Stuck in the Cancun airport for 10+ hours...Oh, and it was Air Canada.

I can definitely get on board with the overbooking and lost/damaged bags. This one is a good thing as it requires more care especially with baggage. We try to exclusively fly west jet and have never had an issue with overbooking. I’m not sure how air canada is with that. The only airline we have experienced over booking with is united but each time it was a flight leaving the US.
Once we’ve had a bag damaged on a WestJet flight. Went to the service counter and they filled out a voucher to have us take it to a repair shop.

My only concern is with the compensation for delayed flights due to safety maintenence. No matter how rigirous checks and maintence are something could still go wrong and stuff breaks. I’m sure there will be pressure put on the pilots to get the plane off the ground. A west jet 737-800 has a guest capacity of 174. I’m sure the company doesn’t want to shell out 70k to 122k f a plane is delayed so will pressure to get the plane off the ground if the problem is more likely that not to be fine and can wait.

I definitely agree, that would be a problem. I haven't read the actual bill, but it sounds like companies won't have to compensate for delays due to safety concerns.

"Flight disruptions within an airline's control but required for safety reasons will not require compensation but airlines will have to maintain a standard of treatment and complete a passenger's itinerary."

Overall, I think this is a good direction to move in. It seems to be similar to the policies in place in Europe. We've faced delays in North America and in Europe...neither are fun, but the cheque that shows up a few weeks later makes delays in Europe a bit easier.

The EU have been operating a similar compensation system for some time now, at least a year as much as my foggy memory goes.

I haven’t notice any change in flight cost in that time.

Edit : I just looked it up and they’ve actually had it for about 15 years. We were recently denied boarding due to an over booked flight out of the EU and they gave us €600 per person (basically we ended up having free flights). They also payed for our hotel accommodation and every meal until we got on our rebooked flight (about 18 hours after the original).
