So we're definitely buying into AKV based on a lot of very good info provided to me in another thread. We've figured our vacation plans and the 225 points will be what we get in at, but there are concerns. The biggest is that we've been trying to have a 2nd child for some time now (our son is now 5) and may have to resort to IVF. This would cost between $15 and $20k, so if we need to do this, I'd like to know I can at least find success renting out the points we won't be using for the next few years.

But in all honestly, I'm banking on Murphy's Law to help us avoid that as I'll be booking a 1 week AKV stay in December of 2008 - which should absolutely mean my wife will be pregnant. Right?!?

Anyway, considering that IS how this will all play out, I want to be comfortable knowing I'll be able to rent out the points out - even though I'm a still "earning my ears" on these boards. For those who have had experience in renting points out, do you think I'd have a problem renting out 400 or so for AKV? Of those, 160 would be developer points - are there any restrictions with those?

Either way, we're getting in. If it meant another healthy baby I'd gladly let those points expire...

...that is until I started realizing how much diapers and formula cost again.

I'm in the start off small camp. Granted, 225 is small to a lot of people on here, but it isn't imo, especially since you do not intend to vacation with it even once a year as you mentioned in previous threads. With the banking & borrowing flexibility, you can really make your points stretch out.

If you do choose to stay with the 225, I would try to get it broken into at least 2 contracts. You have some pretty big financial consequences coming up in your life. You may find that you need some cash in hand or that 225 is really more than what you need but you'd still like to stay with DVC... then you could sell off the smaller contract(s).

You should not have a problem at all renting out your points if you need to.We have had to do that before and then once you have a good trnasaction with someone I have past renters check with me every year to see i I have points availible to rent to them again. So we have never ever had a problem at all getting rid of points if the need arises.

If you have such a big cash outlay for your IVF, why would you consider purchasing DVC if you don't think you will even be able to use it? You could wait a while and purchase AKV on resale at a later date if you really want AKV. You may not want to mess with renting reservations for non-members. They usually just want Sun-Thur, no weekends, resulting in fewer points used. Lots of studios. You might have to make four or five reservations just to rent out your points. The developer points are only good for 12 months from the day you first get the points.

I have not had a problem renting out either. Just comparing the on line Disney rental price will show you that.
There are many people now aware of DVC member rentals and the rates go $10-12 per pt., which can also help you pay your Mtc. Fees for the time being.
Also...buying minimum now and waiting to get those additional points later will cost you more $$....so I would say, yes, take that plunge now and have ALL those pts. going forward.

I agree with Deb...given your situation it seems smart to either wait or start smaller. I'm relatively new to this but having spent (too much) time on these boards it does seem having a few smaller chunks of points (at one or more resorts) instead of one big one is a savvy thing to do, regardless of the situation. We just got in with a small resale contract and are intending to add-on in smaller chunks as finances allow and as we get more convinced this is the way we want to vacation.

In any case it sounds like you have your prioriies straight...as 'magical' as Disney is, it pales in comparison to a baby (or 2, or 3!)

I wish you all the best with your fertility treatments. I have two IVF nephews and after three years of infertility treatments, we adopted our son (who is now nine - it was a long time ago). I will say that I wouldn't count on Murphy's Law - we tried that with vacations, weddings, to no avail. I'd also "hope for the best, plan for the worst." Renting points shouldn't be difficult, but there IS risk - particularly if you are not well aware and prepared to treat it like a business. Make sure to understand the risk. IVF also carries risk - and is usually more expensive than people plan for - Murphy's Law comes to work in adoption and fertility treatments more often than it does in having conception interfere with vacations.
