New Orleans

astor crowne plaza is great. i am a member of priorityclub.com and that's how we found out about it. It is on the corner of canal and bourbon. downstairs is a great restaurant 'the bourbon house.' across the street is 'the red fish grill' (my favorite), 'acme house' is short walk around the corner. you can walk to french market and aquarium/imax.

I stayed there as well. Not bad, right on Bourbon.

Bourbon Street is "questionable" - but I'm assuming that people going for a grown up weekend in New Orleans aren't going to be shocked by drunks or strippers.

We live close to NOLA and visit often--our favorite hotels are the Monteleone, Astor Crowne Plaza, Omni Royal, and the Inn on Bourbon (Ramada). I know you didn't ask, but our favorite restaurants are Deanie's and K-Paul's...yum!

We've loved the Place d' Armes (it has a reputation for being haunted, and that reputation has some merit to it!), Hotel St. Marie, and the Iberville Suites. Have a great trip!

Our first choice is always the Royal Sonesta, the R club (concierge floor) rooms are fantastic, but sometimes pricy depending on if a conference is in town.
For a lovely change of pace, we really liked the Dauphine Orleans. It is one street back from Bourbon, so it's not as noisy, but still super convenient to everything. Free breakfast and two complementary drinks are included with each booking. Temperpedic beds were so comfortable to colapse into after a day of sightseeing and a night of living wilder than we do here at home ;). We had a King Superior room, and it was spacious and had a jacuzzi tub for two in it's own separate dressing room.

We've stayed at the Monteleon, which was a charming hotel that really "felt" like New Orleans, and also at the Sheraton on Canal Street. The Sheraton was very nice, had super comfortable beds, and we had a special rate that included a made-to-order breakfast. Also, our rooms were not ready when we arrived and they bumped us to the Club level, which was terrific, too!

We stayed at the Monteleone just last month.....it was nice, nice...but not so budget friendly (especially parking....wow, but hey, it is New Orleans FQ). It has been a longtime dream of mine to stay in that hotel, and I did get a good price on their website.

I also looked in Place D'Armes, that was my second choice if I could not have swung the Monteleone.

For a special dinner, and if you want seafood, try GW Finn's - it was one of the best meals I have had in years.

All I can say is to stay away from the Hilton over by the convention center. The place is huge and looks nice enough from the outside, but the service was terrible. They misplaced our reservations, refused to give us the room we paid for (we couldn't even go somewhere else since it was a busy holiday time), and we had literally no cold water for the entire 4 nights we were there. I always thought having no hot water was worse than no cold, but I literally could not take a shower in there for fear of being scalded. We did get our money back when I wrote to corporate, but let me just say stay away!

Now hotels I do love are the Omni and Place D'Armes, both are lovely. We also enjoyed the Bienville House and The Roosevelt. :goodvibes We love New Orleans!

We always stay at the Omni Royal. It's one or two blocks off Bourbon Street which is perfect...you're right there but not in the thick of it.

We always stay at Chateau Le Moyne. It's a Holiday Inn but it's 1 block off of Bourbon and the courtyard pool is nice.

We're from the New Orleans area, and the Astor Crowne Plaza is one of our favorite places to stay too! And I definitely recommend The Red Fish Grill - try the pecan pie for dessert! It is SO SO GOOD!!!!

The Monteleone is great too - in fact, we stayed there for our honeymoon! Very nice and centrally located.

I'm assuming that you are wanting to do a budget trip. Some of the nicer places in the area can be pricey. My BFF and I went for a girls weekend and she'd never been before, we we stayed at a place on Bourbon Street. The name escapes me, but my BFF wanted someplace with the "feel" of New Orleans. With the balconies and cool architecture, central location, yet inexpensive. We thought we found the perfect place. I arrived before her and the place was pretty run down. Sinking, uneven floors, older furnishings. Balcony was iffy at best. When she got there, we got a big laugh out of it since the pics on the website were obviously very old ones! But if the place was clean, we would be fine.

Unfortunately, cleanliness was an issue. The sheets on the bed had pubic hairs on them. We complained and they moved us to a different room. That room still had trash in the trashcan, also had dirty sheets, and was worse then the first one. We complained again, and they moved us to one of their "suites". There were roaches on the wall when we walked in, the sheets also had pubic hair on the main bed, the rollaway bed had urine stained sheets on it, and there were mouse droppings under the sofa cushions. At that point, the management told us that we were being "too picky".

So, in the middle of the night, we were scrambling to find lodging and we stayed at the Ramada on Bourbon. It was $30 more per night then the other place but it was WONDERFUL!! It had a gorgeous courtyard with that New Orleans feel to it, private parking (much better then the scary parking garage we had to park in at the first place), great location, it was CLEAN, and had a very nice free breakfast! And the people were very nice to us there! Waaay worth the extra cost and, to be honest, we probably could have gotten a better deal if we'd booked there ahead of time.

So, be wary of the local budget hotels. They seem like they would be charming, but some of them are scary! We had tried to stay away from the chain hotels, but we were so pleased with the Ramada. If I were to ever go back, I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

The Monteleon (sp?) is very nice, and right on royal Street which has some really unique shops. It has been quite pricey lately, but you can get deals during certain months. Try signing up on their website, you'll get emails every now and then.

We have also enjoyed the Marriott on Canal, because if it's location, decent restaurant (sometimes your just too tired after walking all day in NOLA to head out for dinner!!), and large lobby/bar area :thumbsup2 we stayed there twice this past July.

The Westin on Canal is also a great location, but not quite lively enough for us. the beds are very comfy there, and if you want a laid back QUIET lobby, you can curl up in a chair and read while looking out the large glass windows.

Bourbon is just too noisy for us, I would never be able to fall asleep on that street. If noise is not a problem for you, the royal sonesta looks really nice.

have fun!!!

Definitely do your homework! If this is your first visit, I highly recommend staying directly in the Quarter, or at least no farther out than on Canal St. French Quarter hotels can definitely be pricey! Check out TripAdvisor reviews as well as their New Orleans forum. The forum folks are very knowledgeable and friendly. Be aware that Bourbon St. is *very* noisy all night long!

Are you flying in or driving? If you're flying, there's absolutely no need to rent a car, because hotel parking charges are crazy expensive.

DH and I got to spend long weekends in NOLA two summers in a row for our anniversary and we absolutely loved it. There's plenty to do there no matter what your tastes are. We were lucky and have friends who are NOLA natives who steered us to things to do and places to eat. There's no excuse for eating bad food in NOLA! :thumbsup2

This past summer we got a great rate for the Iberville Suites. The location was perfect for us, and the price was right for what we got: a clean, very comfortable, quiet room with a small sitting area, free breakfast, and parking available (we drove). Honestly, in NOLA, we don't spend much time in the room except to sleep and clean up to go out again! Hmmm, kinda like Disney... . ;)

Have a great time!

We loved the Monteleone.
