I am just curious what people think about the responsibililty of the leeves.

So, do you think the federal government is responsible for the leeve system or is the state responsible?

I feel that you can ask the federal government for help with grants and so forth, however, it is the states responsibility in the end.

The cargo ports located along the Mississippi Delta are of national importance. The leeve and pump system was the responsibility of the Corps of Engineers...doesn't that make it a Federal responsibility?

I believe the Feds have jurisdiction over "navigable waterways".

However, the Corps can only exert such jurisdiction as their charter and their funding allows them to exert.

Considering:

1. The amount of goods shipped up and down the Mississippi to/from several states
2. The concentration of oil and natural gas in the area
3. The economic impact that any major city has on the nation's economy (be it New Orleans, New York, etc.)

I believe that the federal government does have a pretty big stake in whether or not New Orleans is habitable. Of course the local and state governments have some responsibility as well.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the federal government actually does have jursidicution over the water being held at bay by the levies, so there's another layer of federal responsibility.

I don't know my civics well enough.

But didn't the govt bail the airlines out--and those are PRIVATE.

The levees serve a public purpose and deserve an important place in federal assistance as does someone who cannot insure their home.

The river serves for interstate commerce--so sure, federal funds should be used in part to restore them.
