The midlife crisis has a whole new target.

Once the bastion of people over 40, the midlife crisis is now affecting people as young as 35, according to researchers from Relate, a British marriage guidance service that interviewed 2,000 people of all ages.

Why? Blame it on work, specifically a shifting corporate office culture where younger people are promoted more quickly.

The upshot is that the average age of a chief executive officer is now 48, down from 59 a generation ago. That means, you had better be halfway to the top office by your mid-30s or you won't ever have a chance for that big job.

Working toward this goal in your 30s requires not only a prodigious effort, but also lots of hours in the office -- the exact time in life when many are also dealing with young children at home. Mix in anxiety over money, mortgages and aging parents, and you have the recipe for a midlife crisis long before the real midlife point.

Fun facts to know and tell about people ages 35 to 44, the time a midlife crisis is most likely to hit:

-- In addition to being the loneliest of all age groups, they're the most dissatisfied with their marriage and unhappiest at work.

-- 21 percent say they feel lonely a lot of the time, compared with just 13 percent over age 65, which is a time in life that many traditionally associate with loneliness.

-- 28 percent said they have left a job because of a difficult relationship with a colleague or boss, the highest in any age group.

-- 20 percent have suffered depression because of relationship problems.

-- 33 percent want to reduce their working hours, the highest of any age group.

-- The majority of respondents said that they were having sex between one and three times a week. Fully 20 percent said they had sex less than once a year and 8.3 percent did not have sex not at all, compared with those aged 45 to 54 where just 10 percent had no sex at all.

-- 40 percent said they were satisfied with their sex life, while 20 percent said it was "adequate" and 10 percent admitted it was "disappointing." Fewer than eight percent described their sex life as "mind-blowing."
