New Job... Need advice...

I wasn't sure where I should post this, but I need some advice concerning my new Job. We have a trip planned to Disney in December, but I don't have any vacation time. I have been working there for about 1.5 months. It is a small professional company with 2 partners and about 8 employees. Do you think I should just cancel my trip, or ask off (without pay)? I would need 3 days off. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't know what to do...

Can you ask to borrow against your future vacation time? DH started with a new company 2 weeks before our last trip!!! He told them up front when they made the offer that we had a vacation planned and paid for and asked that he be allowed to go ahead and use vacation time early --5 days (he was actually hoping they would allow him to just start right after the trip, but they needed him ASAP ).

They had no problem with this. If for any reason he had quit the job before he earned the time they would have taken the "payment" for those days out of his last check. Of course, by now he has earned that time and even a few more days.

I think it would have to depend on the climate in the office. Do they NEED you enough to let you be off for a few days without thinking that makes you unreliable? Or are you more in need of them and the job so that you can't afford to have this make a negative impression? Ideally you probably should have mentioned this when they made the job offer so they would know ahead of time--unless you think they would have just decided not to hire you because of it. If that is the case, then asking for time off might not be a good idea.

If the job is going great, and you feel you are getting along well with everyone and the bosses are happy with you then I would try the idea of borrowing against future time, just keep that in mind when planning future events --like the holidays--that you will already have 3 days used. Also, you might ask about comp time. Since it is only 3 days maybe you can make it up by coming in early or staying late for a few weeks, or coming in on Sat. Just depends on the business.

I would just explain the situation to them. The borrowing future time, or making it up by coming in early, or a few Saturdays before you leave are great suggestions!! If you talk to them now, you are giving them plenty of notice, so hopefully they will be accomodating!

I know this is probably a little late but I would have told the company about the planned Disney vacation ,when officially accepting the job. I would ask for time off without pay. Do it soon .

I would suggest that you inform them immediately so they can make whatever arrangements are needed. In the future should you face this again, I suggest informing your employer when they offer the job. You give them time to cover and then it is no surprise during your probabtion period.

Most employers have no problem with vacations. They just appreciate and value consideration. I do think that offering extra hours is a good idea so they see you are considering their needs as well.

#1. As someone who hires people, you should have asked or advised them (as others have said) when they offered you the job or interviewed you. That is a standard question we ask when interviewing someone....

#2. It isn't going to be any easier if you wait!!! Not many companies will let you "borrow" future time off, so plan on not being paid, if they let you have the time. Ask now, and get it over with.

I'm just the opposite and bosses run when they see me coming down the hall. I lay it all on the line and don't play games. They usually have a hard time saying no to me. Do you want me to talk to your boss?

I guess the first thing I would have done is told them that you had this planned before your hired on. Barring this, I guess you can go ahead and ask for the three days off w/o pay...are you going during the holidays? do they work the holidays? Good luck to you! Helen

Just ask for it, all the can say is no...you can't be fired for asking for time off.
Just maybe make a nice plate of brownies first and bring that in when you ask.

I just went through this myself, switched jobs and in taking the new one I informed the boss up front we always have a Disney vacation in the works and ours was on such and such a date, tickets paid and all and would be in about 3 months after my hire date. Told him I would take it, no pay and he said fine. Just came back 2 days ago, and told him about the fiasco in Jacksonville and the train bomb scare and he said take an extra day off to recoup, come back Friday to get reaquainted and have the weekend to relax and regroup. Its better to be up front with employers and never wait till the last minute to explain. Worked for me. Had a great time at Disney too.

I'm a human resources person, too, and I agree with Stan. Most employers have no problem with you taking the time, as long as they've been informed about it during the interview process and you recognize that it will most likely be without pay. Also, the sooner you tell them, the better you'll feel!!

Just an update:

After reading the responses and talking it over with DW, we have decided to go over Thanksgiving holiday. We have a waterview room at POFQ. We have character breakfast at crystal palace, thanksgiving dinner at rose and crown and candlelight processional package at San Angel Inn. I thought everything would be all booked up... but we got what we wanted. (Except no availability at resorts on the monorail). Thanks for the concern.

Thank you for the update! Sounds like you made a very good compromise. You aren't going when you originally wanted to, BUT you still get to take a trip this year with out having to cause an uncomfortable situation at work. Plus, you've just shortened your countdown by a month, you lucky dog, you!
