I have been reading that it can be helpful to develop new hobbies as you get older, so that you are learning new things and doing things that are different from what you have previously done. Making your brain learn something new can apparently help prevent dementia.

So I am trying to find a new hobby or activity - something different. Currently my main hobby is reading - I read a lot. I also write. I like to do puzzles (crossword, Sudoko, Ken-Ken). I am not fit at all. I have tried in the past to learn knitting but have never been able to make it work.

When I try to think of new hobbies, I just draw a blank.

Just wondered if anyone had any interesting hobbies that I might consider. What do you do??

I crochet. I taught myself through You tube videos. I just l love it, it's so relaxing. Plus I can do other things at the same time. What I think I like the best though is it keeps my hands busy so I'm not tempted to snack mindlessly.

Try painting or drawing :o remember, everything takes practice...no one starts out as Picasso. I have to remind my students of that all the time, it seems like so many people start making art just to be good at it...but art can be so much fun, if you don't take it too seriously.

Oh what do I do for fun...

Study for my major even when I am not in classes. Seriously, I love the topic that much. Also, generally studying up on anything I find interesting.
I am in and out of the Society for Creative Anachronism
I play D&D
I embroider things - mostly geeky things
I like to cook
I draw Celtic knots. I taught myself from a book.
I play with the cats.
I post here and on other message boards on topics that interest me
I love Disney, clearly. I get involved in long debates on theories and create art projects and have soooo many Disney clothes.

Cross stitch...instant results and you can choose pictures that you like.

Take violin lessons. I have had many adult students over the years. You will use parts of your brain you didn't know existed!

I wish I could teach you in a conversation but it's something you need to watch to get. I'll take a look on YouTube and see what I can come up with. If not, do you have a local store where you could ask for a quick tutorial..it really doesn't take a long time to catch on to the basics.

This is super simplified but this shows you the mechanics at its simplest form. The video makes me crazy because she can't find her holes because her fabric is too loose but I'm picky like that LOL

Youtube cross stitch basics and there's enough out there to get you started. Please pm if you have any questions at all. I love cross stitching so I'm always eager to start someone else on the path :)

I am taking tap dancing. I haven't danced in 10 years. My class is a great mix of beginning and intermediate. It is a lot of fun, and I am very sore.

I like to learn how to apply makeup. DD and I like to create things for her American girl doll, I took up sewing (on a machine), I'd like to start a vlog channel.

You could collect things? As I'm sure everyone here knows full well by now, I collect coins and often sell them on for a profit. Other people collect stamps. I like the gardening idea, there's so much depth to it!

I read tarot cards. I took a course in it many years ago, but when I had children, I didn't read for years. Now that my children are older, I'm getting back into it again.

When my Aunt retired she took up painting. What is amazing is that after about 15 yrs she is still at it while being in her 70's and suffering with MS. She is amazing!

I second crocheting. I tried knitting but I just can't get the hang of it. I have just started "upcycling" (as opposed to "recycling") things. Basically, I just find old junk and repaint it, add fabric, decoupage it etc!! I have realized that if I can paint it....BEWARE. So, don't stand still too long around my house :) I think I may start some quilting and easy sewing as well. I see so many cute Disney fabrics!! My dd has a passion for bows so I'll probably give that a shot too!

If you like to read you could try branching out into a genre that you haven't tried before. Trying a new volunteer opportunity could be fun. Personally, I enjoy crochet, and I find it easier than knitting. There's too much thinking involved in knitting, but crochet I can do absent-mindedly while watching a movie with the kids. Also, if you're interested in needle work, I love making quiet books. I hand sew them. there's a ton of stuff on Pinterest about them--examples and free patterns. Right now I'm making a dollhouse page for my daughter, with an un-paper doll that has different Disney character outfits. So far I've made Tink and sleeping Beauty outfits. If you have any young kids in your life you could make one to give to them.

Actually, Pinterest is a great place to look for a new hobby. I'm planning to try my hand at furniture-making. I told my son that we were going to build some patio chairs using plans on Pinterest. There's a bajillion great ideas on Pinterest and it's HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. You've been warned.

Letterboxing. I know you mentioned not being fit and this can get you out just for leisurely walks. People plant boxes with rubber stamps and a log book. Then they post clues online that you follow to find the box. You have your own stamp and your own log book. Once you find the box, you stamp their book and also use their stamp to make an entry in your log book. You note the date and place. It's similar to geocaching. Which is something else to explore. Think of it as a treasure hunt! Check out www.atlasquest.com. It's actually a great hobby for all ages!
