Hi, I'm new here, I'm usually on the Resorts boards. My family of 6 is considering purchasing DVC points. I'm sure this question has been asked a million times but...could anyone give any advice on how many points we should purchase? We like to go to WDW every year and since we have four children, we will need a two bedroom. Is it better to purchase from Disney or on a re-sale? We are interested in the Boardwalk Villas. Thanks, any info will be appreciated!

Since you are interested in BWV, you'll need to purchase a resale since Disney isn't selling BWV anymore. If you really want to purchase through Disney Beach Club villas are going to be up for sale sometime next year. Depending on when you want to travel to DW, it depends on the number of points you'll need. For example a 2 BR standard view in adventure season(cheapest, Jan, Sept and first 2 weeks of Dec) is 222 points for a week, but a 2 BR preferred in magic season(most of the summer) is 350. Premier season is more, this is the holidays. As you cans see, it really depends on when you want to travel most of the time. We like to travel in the summer and want to go 10 days every other year in a 2 bedroom, so we bought enough points for that. I suggest you read the FAQ on the top of the board and hopefully it can answer some of your questions. If you let me know when you want to usually travel, I can look at the point charts and let you know how many points you are looking at.

For Boardwalk Villas, your only option will be resale. The number of points you buy will depend on how often you wish to go, how long you wish to go, and in what season you wish to go. Look at the FAQ on this board as a great start to learning your way around DVC and the point system. There is also a point calculator that can be used to tell you how many points you will need for a given type of trip and accomodation. Welcome to the board and keep asking questions. There are lots of very informed people here who certainly were a great source of information when we made our purchase decision.

Thanks for your replies--I will check out the info you suggested!

Awhile back I created a fairly detailed Excel spreadsheet that will calculate points, at the click of a button, for any DVC resort, room type, and dates you select. It's very fast and easy to use. It requires Excel 97 or higher to use. Its free shareware.

You can use it to experiment all you want with different resorts, accommodations, and dates.
