What's to see there? What's to do? DH and I were watching Chowdown Countdown (101 best places to eat in the U.S.) and decided that wherever #1 was, we would try to make a trip there! It was Louis Lunches, the birthplace of the burger, in New Haven, CT. I was really hoping #1would be in Orlando, though. Anyway, tell me about the area! TIA!:)

New Haven is home to Yale University, which has a beautiful, architecturally significant campus downtown. Student-led tours are available most days. Yale is also home to the Yale Center for British Art, which contains the largest collection of British art outside of the UK. There is also the large and comprehesive Yale University Art Gallery across the street from the British Art Center and the Peabody Museum of Natural History located about a mile from the New Haven Green. The Peabody has many artifacts from Machu Pichu since it was a Yale professor who discovered the site for the scientific world in 1911.

If you like old cemetaries, I highly recommend a stroll through the Grove Street Cemetary adjacent to the Yale campus. Some of the graves date from colonial times.

The New Haven Green is pretty and home to three historic churches.

New Haven is a theatre town. The Shubert, Yale Rep, and Long Wharf Theatre are all well-regarded and the Yale School of Drama often has productions as well.

New Haven has many good restaurants. I am especially fond of the Italian restaurants on Wooster Street. Sally's and Pepe's are two pizzarias that rank among the top in the country. There are also good Thai and Ethiopian restaurants.

My suggestions were already made, but I second the Peabody Museum- it is fantastic.

Also Pepe's pizza on Wooster St is my all time favorite, even if I have to drive 45 minutes to get there, then wait in line to be seated.

New Haven is not all that safe- stay outside the city.

Mystic is a quick ride up I-95 N (about 1/2 hour?) and there is Mystic Aquarium and Seaport. Skip the pizza- stick with Pepes or Sallys in New Haven.

Also, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos are about an hour away from New Haven.

Ted's Restaurant is about a half hour North off I-91 N in Meriden Ct and has "World Famous Steamed Cheeseburger" and has also been featured on Food Network. I've never had one, but I know some folks who love 'em and some who say they are just "ok".

We drive almost 17 hours just to get Pepe's! Well, that and to see my DH's family in Branford. ;)

I think Foxwoods and Mohegan are closer than Mystic. If you enjoy baseball there are minor league teams in CT (New Britain Rockcats - I used to work for them). I'm not sure how many other ones are in the state, but New Britain is about 25-30 minutes north of New Haven.

I would also suggest Mystic, CT. It's a beautiful area. Very touristy. I'm from the Mystic area.
New Haven is not nearly as nice. Good food, but a busy congested city with crime. At least that's most of what I hear about it.
My view of New Haven is on I-95 on my way to Disney!!!!:cool1:

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like there are lots of great places to eat- one of my favorite things to do! Have any of you actually heard of the place I mentioned in the OP?
The architecture and old cemetary sound cool, too. I 've never really been to the east coast, so we may need to expand this trip!

I have heard of Louis Lunch... but maybe from Food Network? I'll ask a family member who grew up in New Haven and get back to you.

If you stay in New Haven, the Omni Hotel and The Study are good bets. New Haven does have crime, but use common sense and you should be fine. I lived downtown on the Yale campus for four years and never had any problems. If you go during the school year, then there will be lots of people walking around campus and the adjacent streets well into the night.

I think they are both equal distance.

I have taken my kids to Mystic Aquarium & it takes me about 40 min, Mohegan is also 40 min from me, Foxwoods just a bit farther. And I am about 35 min from New Haven.

And I wouldn't stay in New Haven. Yes there are some pretty places but I would rather stay in one of the suburbs or even a little farther out.

You can really stay anywhere in CT & drive to any part see some sites along the way & drive back to your hotel.

The farther west you stay it will probably be a bit more expensive (I should know as I grew up there!) since you'd be closer to NY.

Another yummy place is Lenny & Joes Fishtale. Luckily that is in my neck of the woods & I can go grocery shopping & pick up dinner all in the same trip (take out).

Lenny's & Joes Fishtale is great. There are a lot of great seafood restaurants along the shoreline.

Lenny and Joe's is yummy. And yes, Mystic is further now that I got to look at a map.

If you're traveling along I95, Stew Leonard's is a fun place to stop....it's a food store, but more. It's hard to describe! I haven't been to one in several years (we used to live in CT about 11 years ago....) but it was one of those places we'd stop at if we were near, and brought people visiting us to....

I am working a couple days per week in New Haven right now... I'll touch on just the food aspect as I love food and would be hospitalized if I didn't have some self control.

Pepe's pizza is really good. Michelangelo's is better. I personally think Louis' Lunch is a bit overrated. We tried to go there today, but it was closed on Mondays. We ended up at 5 guys burgers and fries on Amity Rd. and it's awesome (it WILL clog your arteries).

Mystic is a solid hour from New Haven with traffic. I agree it's a great place to go as is Mohegan Sun.

New Haven would definitely not be a destination vacation for me. It has some bad areas, but if you're passing through, or are in the area, there's some nice things to do, and a lot of great places to eat.

Honorable mention goes to:
Capetta's
D'Matos Seafood
Johnny Salami's
Stowe's Seafood

If you want a little more upperscale, go to Carmen Anthony's. It's AWESOME.

Ok, I'm hungry now...

It is that good. I'm glad I live close!!
The best bacon and mozz pie ever. :woohoo:

There is also http://www.lakecompounce.com/ in Bristol. Nice family amusement park if you like that sorta thing.

Mmmmm....a bacon pie! (Supposed to be well-done, but they forgot that part. It was still yummy!)

Marco Pizza in Branford is really good, too! One of the former Pepe's workers opened Marco. This is their bacon pie:

I am so hungry now! My DH and I need to go to CT soon!

I may need to get the 'rents to take me to Lenny and Joe's next weekend!

MMMM... going to Pepes today! Great food porn HsvT. :yay:

I work in New Haven and have eaten at Louis Lunch many times. You can only get onions, tomato and cheese on your burger which would make you think that it might be a bit dry, but it actually is very juicy. The onions are cooked sitting right on the meat patty and they are cooked in some really old things. But it all works.

It is different then any other cheeseburger that you are going to get any where else and worth a try.

Pepe's and Sallys are both good and have a very long standing rivalry going on. Depending on when you are going, you may not hit a line. I drive by them everyday and fight the urge to stop and grab a pie for dinner. :rotfl:
There is a great pastry shop in the building next door if you are looking for some good Italian pastries for dessert.

Lenny and Joe's is soooo good for seafood. The Madison location is pretty much just fried seafood, but in the summer time they have an ice cream shop and a merry go round outside that the kids love. You go to the counter, order your food and wait for your number to be called. At the Clinton location you are seated at a table and have an actual waitress. The menu is much more extensive including broiled seafood, salads, and other non-fish items. Plus a full bar. My favorites there are the scallops and shrimp, just about anyway they cook them.

Bills Seafood is down the road in Westbrook, right next to the singing bridge. You can sit outside in season and have a table by the river. They are best known for their clams. Both whole belly and the strips. The only place I will get them, including Lenny and Joe's.

There are outlet shopping centers in Clinton and Westbrook. They both have a good selection of stores.
