New hamburger/hotdog rolls at Disney

I thought that this was a message board specifically designated to topics related to Disney Dining....is it not? :confused3

Just because I dislike the new buns at Disney doesn't mean that I don't care about gas prices and world hunger.

get over yourself. :sad2:

Just saw this about the change. Our trip is in two weeks.

So, what happens if you cannot eat whole grain breads? My mother has kidney problems and that's on the do not eat list.

It is stupid that there's no choice of white or wheat.

I found this on the internet, I think you may be OK because the breads at Disney are not a true whole grain.

Breads can be a source of confusion for dialysis patients or CKD non-dialysis patients who require phosphorus restriction. Refined white bread (made from wheat flour) is generally low in phosphorus and potassium. The more bran and whole grains in bread, the greater the potassium and phosphorus content (and higher fiber content). A soft wheat bread that does not contain whole grain is acceptable for most kidney diets limited in potassium and phosphorus. Often soft wheat breads contain molasses to give the brown color. In deciding which one, consider how many slices you would consume (a whole sandwich vs. one slice) and if potassium and phosphorus levels are normal or high on monthly blood work. A fact often overlooked is all breads, regardless or being refined or whole grain, provide a significant amount of sodium, around 130 mg or more per slice. It adds up for those who eat 3 or more slices of bread a day. Compare labels and look for low sodium breads as an alternative. Checkout size of the bread slices too–thicker slices are generally provide more minerals than thin slices.
Check with the renal dietitian for guidance on including whole grain bread if you choose it over refined bread. Guidelines for how often and how much to include each day are helpful.
Here’s a comparison of wheat breads:
1 slice white bread: 25 mg potassium, 25 mg phosphorus sodium, 150 mg, fiber 0.6 grams
1 slice soft wheat bread: 46 mg potassium, 39 mg phosphorus, sodium 130 mg, fiber 0.9 grams
1 slice whole grain bread: 70 mg potassium, 57 mg phosphorus, sodium 130 mg, fiber 1.9 grams

One more possibility is to consider eating the same breads that a person with celiac would consume.

If this doesn't work for you though, you may have to do what those who only could eat grain breads did before the change, and make alternate arrangements. It is always unfortunate for some of the crowd - it seems like Disney is always either one way or the other.

As much as I disagree with WDW's choice to shove "healthy dining" down everyone's throat versus "choices" like most places have and think it is a bad business choice, I have to also say:

Are you guys kidding me???
Only 1/2 of all Americans eligible to vote in the general elections DO, when we are dealing with high gas prices and the problems that come with it due to horrible energy policies passed by our Congress and voting is the major way to force change , yet there is a thread about rolls at WDW? There is world hunger and food rationing, but we are worried about the rolls? I checked out this link because I thought maybe there was a food poisioning scare or something strange...I can understand being upset by the lack of choice (which is totally wrong on WDW's part), but do you really think WDW cares? We can all send 12 emails a day and they could care less...did the change the dining plan tip thing after people were up in a huff? Every single thing WDW does (and I am as big a WDW fan as you all) is for one thing: to make money. Even their forcing the "healthy menu" is cheaper for them in the long run. Just stop going to WDW for a year or two...hitting companies in the bottom line is the only way to get them to change, sad to say. But there are bigger problems in the world than crappy rolls at WDW.

Flame on!

I care...because my DD has a life-threatening peanut and tree nut allergy and by making this change, she will be extremely limited to what she can eat safely at WDW. We choose to vacation at WDW because of Disney's way they "cater" to people with food allergies. It is a sense that Disney cares enough to go out of their way to help people vacation more safely. By changing the food offerings, it changes my loyalty to them... If I am going to worry about foods she can eat, I can do that on vacation anywhere.
It is not a matter of what rolls taste good for my DD, it is a matter that she CAN'T eat them and doesn't have a choice about it.

We care deeply about the world's issues right now and do MUCH to contribute to humanity. The reality of it is that we live in America and people go on vacation.

Tricia, thanks for your helpful research. As shown in the comparisons, there's a big difference between white and whole wheat (supposedly disney using whole wheat) in the potassium and phosphorus. For someone that's dangerously close to having to go on dialysis, she tries hard to be 'good'. We go to her nephrologist every 2 months. The list of what she can't or shouldn't eat is pretty long.

chigirl, no offense but when you're obviously so concerned about the state of the world, why are you wasting time reading disboards. Humans need an outlet and escape from life's woes and turmoil. Disney is that escape and if we want to vent about something that's our perrogative. You don't have to read it. If we must dwell on all the serious subjects in life and this country 24/7, we'll all go

You go girl! Actually, the masses might be able to influence the change in rolls, but it wont be at Disney's cost, I can guaranty that. Then people will complain why the new fresh tasty white rolls are so expensive. :rotfl2:

Wow...I think most of us come on here for the purpose of entertainment. Disney is something that most of us here love (all aspects of...yes even the food) and use as a means of free time and fun. I don't think us discussing the buns or rolls mean to be neglectful of all the negative topics going on around the world. I am very aware of the pitiful gas prices and all the horrible struggles going on in other countries. Maybe its just me and go ahead and get upset but these boards give me something to look forward to and take my mind temporarily off the hard core stuff. It's Disney! Most of us really enjoy talking about it even if some are disagreeing with a decision they are making on bread. Lighten up...we ALL know how bad things are. We are just trying to have a little fun talking about something we LOVE!

I hope that you aren't as limited as you believe you will be. I know that Disney is pretty good about working with nut allergies. Hopefully they ensured that their enhanced bread doesn't contain tree nuts in the enhancements.

From what I've read online about nut tree allergies, it sounds like those nuts end up about everywhere - including soaps and lotions! I can't imagine how hard it is for you to deal with your daughters allergies. It has to be scary for you as a parent.

OMG, I was being sarcastic!

Why the hell would I have 200+ posts myself and even be LOOKING at a post about rolls if I, too, didn't love Disney! But I will go and have a tranquilizer now while I am at it....

Oh, okay!!!
I have much to learn from you, elder!

No, I don't think anyone's kidding you. It's a topic on a message board. Appetizers at LeCellier and the types of coffee creamers available at a food court aren't nearly as earth-shattering as global warming, the prices of fuel, nor our current Congress, but you were able to take time out of your philanthropic schedule and post about those things. Can't others post their vents/question about WDW topics that they have a feeling or two about?

ETA: Nevermind. I see you were just being sarcastic.

Disney is truly great with food allergies but it is hard to keep up with when they make changes so frequently! There are obviously no nuts in the breads/rolls, but when they add certain ingredients (the "grains"), a cross-contamination possibility comes into play which we just can't take the chance on. When it comes to table service, the restaurants are awesome at accommodating allergy needs, it really is more counter service that becomes the hard part. My DD just started eating something other than chicken strips too, lol!
Besides the point, we just would like the yummy, squishy hot dog and hamburger rolls! ;)

The buns and pizza crusts (and some recent reports include waffles) are not whole wheat. They are multi-grain and they do carry a cross contam warning because of sunflower seeds so they are not safe for nut allergies. My normal allergy safe foods at WDW were burgers, hot dogs, or pizza in years past but on our trip this year it was incredibly incredibly difficult for me to get any CS food except kids mac and cheese and a few side items here and there. Each day I could eat a bunless burger (using lower fat meat now and just dry) or dog or wait until I went back to the resort CS where they had 1 white bread type (muffaletta) and they would make me a special sandwich. The allergy safe foods they are offering now are gluten free which to those of us who eat regular foods just taste horrible and the Amy's gluten free pizza still had seeds. In terms of allergy eating the TS places are much better than normal but day after day of being offered nasty gluten free rolls and brownies isn't a great solution for me. Our next trip will be much shorter and include trips to Universal and Sea World for the first time in 6 years of annual WDW trips a big part of this is due to the repitiveness of the food particularly for the kids meals and my allergies.
