New Furniture UGH!!

We tend to go to a huge local-ish (50 min drive, next county over) furniture store that has tons of display pieces plus an entire clearance building on their campus. Another place we've had luck is stopping into the smaller furniture places in our regional Amish country area. I will also stop in to an Arhaus clearance center to see what's in stock--sometimes it's scratch & dent, other times it's just returns, but it can be 70% off the catalog price if you catch a bonus discount weekend.

I'm not as fussy as I once was because furniture doesn't seem to last as long as it once did for us. I think it's the combination of how things are made these days plus two boys and a dog. We get 8 about years out of a couch now.

Our furniture just came in and was delivered on Saturday. Our metro area only has 3 stores left selling quality living room furniture anymore. The delivery guys asked if our old set came from the same store and we said no and told them where we had bought that. Oh yeah, we were the delivery team for that store, too.

Our previous furniture was Amish built and lasted somewhere in the range of 22-24 years, we can't remember. It was from the only Amish builder I am aware is still making upholstered pieces, Smith Brothers of Berne, Indiana. Frames were still solid as new, but the fabric and cushions had served their time. We considered purchasing from them again, however the store that carries the brand in our area is further from our home and would have boosted our delivery charge to $250 plus some mileage costs. That plus the fact the furniture itself was going to cost at least $1,200 more led us to go back to another solid brand we've had in the past from a store closer to our home so our delivery charge was only $100, causing us to make the decision.

Our furniture is about 20 years old. I am noticing the cushions are starting to wear down. But I just don't have it in me to go furniture shopping and dealing with the hassle of it all. I think when the time comes I'm going to go a mom and pop shop that is about 45 mins out of our metro area. We have just started appreciating those types of stores now vs the big box.

But one thing to really check with a reclining sofa is how your legs are going to hang. Our couch ends and loveseat reclines. And, I recall back when we bought it we had a hard time finding ones where our feet actually stayed on the bottom piece. And, we're not tall (5'7 and 6'0). Most we tested our feet would hang off and that would likely get annoying after sitting for hours.

Good luck!

Maybe consider having a local or online upholstery shop remake the cushions?
My former couch was given to me by my then landlord. Stripped it down to the bare wood and gave it to a local upholstery shop to rebuild; supplied them with the fabric to lower costs (my Mom owned a fabric store). Came out beautifully and was featured in a borough wide newspaper. That was in the early ‘80’s. Was recovered about 20 years later and enjoyed until it was sold during our downsizing. Got a pretty penny for it and nice memories.

A couple of years ago we replaced our bedroom set (30+ years old) and just a little over a month ago, we replaced our living room furniture (about 12 years old).

The original bedroom furniture was well made, but dark, cherry wood/stain with the Queen Ann fancy crap. OLD and just not what I wanted anymore. We looked at all of the places near us, Jordyn's, Bernie & Phyl's, Ashley, even Bobs Discount furniture. Definitely not the quality of furniture from 30 years ago but 3-4 times the price! My husband started researching Amish furniture. We ended up purchasing custom Amish made furniture for almost 1/2 the price the stores here wanted for Amish made furniture. Sets in the stores were over $10,000. We paid about $6,000 with delivery to our bedroom on the 2nd floor. Well-made and simple, so we plan on having it for a long time!!

We just replaced our living room furniture. Had the big, oversized reclining sectional and recliner chair. We again looked at all the local places. We wanted to get away from the sectional and go with couch/loveseat/chair. SO many of the couches/loveseats have the consoles/cup holders in the middle and we didn't want our living room to look like a movie theater. We ended up getting a set from Ashley/Regency Furniture and we opted for a darker gray, leather, power set. Not my ideal as I didn't really want leather, but it is a really nice set, and I got to get some really nice fuzzy/cozy blankets lol. They were having a sale, so we got 20% off and free white glove delivery. $4800 for all the pieces (not the coffee/end tables). And again, simple and decently made and hope to keep it for a long time.
