The new hotel being built on the former River Country site will have 1,340 hotel room bays and 300 DVC "equivalency units" will use up to 940 of those, according to an article out today.

This is not the first time a DVC resort was proposed for this site. This video shows a design for a previous proposal developed in 2011 but never completed. It is unclear if this same design will be built now.

It's a little odd to choose another wilderness theme with two already in existence at Wilderness Lodge. On a positive note, the 2011 design looks to have included a lazy river! (see image)

This is all rumor, though. They never disclose number of units at this stage. Note that we STILL don't know unit count or variety at Riviera.

Disney actually did announce that Riviera has "300 units". What that means in terms of actual number of rooms (what they consider a unit) is TBD.

For this project the article says it will have 300 DVC "equivalency units" so I would assume that means it's line with the size of Riviera? That's a pretty significant resort when you add in the 1,340 hotel rooms too.

I mean, I do believe they'll build something and drop DVC in, because otherwise when they're done selling Riviera they'll just have Aulani, the resort sale that will never end (before 2024 or later).

In the comment section of that article I saw a lot of people mention that adding a new resort will increase the crowds in the parks. I disagree. Disney’s hotel occupancy is never 100% and even if it was I don’t see many people canceling their plans. They’ll just stay off-site. The benefit I see is Disney ends up having a greater supply of rooms, meaning possibly lower prices for us, after they’ve been jacked up to cover the cost of building the new resort.

I read it a little bit different. The resort would have 1340 'bays' with DVC taking 300 rooms, or up to 940 of the 1340 bays. So I didn't read it as 1340 hotel rooms plus 300 DVC rooms.

Since Disney can't fill hotel rooms now without free dining, how are they going to fill up even more? DVC is different. There's a sucker born every minute.

I think you're probably right.

That's 90% just a marketing ploy (as you probably know). If you book a room with the regularly available 20-30% discounts and buy a dining package yourself it's basically the same price. It's certainly not 'free' since you have to pay rack rate for the room.

Right, they can't fill rooms without offering "free dining" which we all know is not really free, but free pulls in the uneducated. More vacant hotel rooms aren't going to happen anytime soon, what with all the other money losses Disney is suffering.

Except for the high dollar Star Wars hotel that will pull in lots of guests for the minimum stay just so they can say they did it.

Except in the case of value resorts. I just found this out myself. I’m out of points and joining my sister at pop in September. I worked numbers like you don’t know and I can’t even get a $89 room in a Disney Springs resort to beat free dining. The room discount is $20 per night. 4 of us are going to eat free and upgrade to gold APs with our required hoppers. So ultimately I’m paying $140 for pop, but that’s it since I would have had to but my AP anyways. Now on a deluxe younare right, it’s not coming out. Moderates are iffy.
