New eyeglasses, what's on my lenses?

Got these new glasses a few weeks ago and have had some trouble adjusting to them. I've been wearing glasses since second grade and have usually found that new prescriptions really improved my vision.

So I'm carefully cleaning these glasses and holding them up to the light and I discovered there are some symbols etched in the lenses. WTH:confused3
The symbols look a little like a "Q", with "00" directly underneath. I'm sure this is some kind of code of the prescription strength, but I don't think I should be able to actually see it. The result is I'm getting a little blur like one would experience if there was a small smudge on the lenses.

I'm taking these back to the doc for an explanation, but I'm curious about what happened that allows me to see these symbols. Do they normally buff that out? :confused3

I have had bifocals for years, and never noticed anything like what you're describing until the most recent pair. I asked at the Lenscrafters, and they said the markings are always there, and show them where the distance ends and the near begins! Now why have I never seen that before? I don't know, but I agree, it is annoying. I don't have any solution, just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one!

My guess is that the lenses weren't cut in the right place on the bigger lens, and they tried to salvage the lens, so they cut it where there was information etched.

I've had this happen, and it's bad news, because the curve is no longer on the right place on the lens to match your prescription. I thought my presciption was wrong (that the Dr. adjusted it incorrectly), but when I took the glasses back to him, he looked and was not pleased by the way the lens had been cut/ground. He encouraged me to send them back.

Ok former Optician here. The markings you describe sound like manufactures markings. ALL lenses have them. Most of the time they get edged off. Cut off when the lenses are cut to size. As the PP said "no line" bifocals have lazier marks as well. Lens need to be "layed out" before edging. Meaning according to your pupilary distance the lense get moved in or out x amount of mm. In the case of bifocals it in or out and up or down. If I were you I would first go to your optician and ask them to 1) double check the your Rx 2) check the pupilary distance against the ocular center. The ocular center of your lens should be right in front of your pupil when you are look straight ahead. It is my guess that this may be off. Only because normally the laser insignia get edged off unless you have extremely large glasses or your eyes are wide set.

that would be SO annoying! i hate it when anything gets on my glasses, i can't imagine something being noticeably etched on them.

I knew someone would know. I'm thinking this is a mistake because the new prescription I have is only slightly different from the old one. In fact, I believe one side is the same while the other was tweaked slightly. With respect to the size of the lenses, I made an effort to get something very close to what I had previously(which did not reveal the symbols). Also I'm pretty sure my eyes are not any more wide set than they were 18 months ago.

I'll be looking into this(oops, there's a pun!). Thanks for the advice/help.:thumbsup2
