It seems to me that there is a period, very close to check in dates, when Disney frees up inventory into the DVC point system.Anyone notice this as well? Any guess how close to check in that is? Thanks!

Nope. Disney doesn't have the option to free up inventory. All inventory is controlled by the owners, not by Disney.
If you're asking specifically about Poly, then, as the resort is built out, Disney declares the inventory available for sale which adds to the available inventory.
If people are going to cancel, they usually will 31 days before so the points don't go into holding.
There's a note on the reservation page to call member services if your check-in date is within 10 days. They do sometimes call the resort to see if they have availability they want to open up.

I don't agree, Disney can take rooms out of inventory, give rooms to Disney for cash stays starting at 60 days before check in and they can bring back rooms from Disney.
The possibility exists that rooms moved to Disney and not booked are brought back to improve Disney's reservation numbers.
I agree Bill. I just wonder if that is done randomly, based on need, or at a fixed time. I have seen changes in availability which support the fact that Disney places units back in inventory close to check in dates.
A DVC owner has until the day before check in to cancel their room reservation and not loose their points. That is why you will see rooms open up close to your check in date. People change the minds and decide to move to another resort at the last minute if a room is available so that will free up rooms. Last week I was booked in a room at OKW but really wanted BLT I stalked the boards and two days before my stay there was a opening for one night at BLT and I snatched it. When I booked OKW there were no other studio rooms at Disney - not even at SSR. I don't like OKW but would stay there if it was the only option. I kept stalking the boards in hopes a room would become available.
