New DSC-RX100 M1 user, any tips to get me started?

I just got my new RX100 and it looks great. But now I'm not really sure what settings to use or how to get the most out of my camera.

Any tips for a newbie?

If you don't have a RAW photo editing program (like Adobe Lightroom) check out Phase One Capture One express for Sony:
http://www.phaseone.com/Imaging-Software/Capture-One-for-Sony.aspx. You can upgrade to the full Pro for $30 (it's normally $300)

I've also heard you can hold the camera sideways and use vertical panorama to get a higher resolution left to right panoramic landscape.

(You can get an even better panorama with multiple photos stitched together, Microsoft's free ICE program does a great job)

Otherwise, it sounds like you would want to learn S mode, to control shutter speed before getting into A mode (photographers generally start with A mode on most cameras)

Check for auto flash in Auto mode, many (most?) cameras will automatically use the flash if in Auto mode, very embarrassing in a dark ride! Program mode usually will require you to manually select the flash, much better.

Try the Aperture and Shutter speed modes to get a feel for what they can do for your photos but don't be shy to use Auto or Program for that once in a lifetime photo to avoid beginner's exposure mistakes.

I used my RX100 on our August WDW trip and I am pleased with the results. I consider myself a frustrated amateur photographer. I shot in iA most of the time and shot some video as well (I also had my GoPro).


Not too bad for indoors






I realize that I have yet to use the full potential of this camera and look forward to doing a better job. Have fun!
