for flights booked on or after May 23, 2009 for travel on or after July 1

for a bag that weights 51-70 lbs $90 domestic and $150 international
for a bag that's 63"-80" $175 domestic

Passengers who aren't careful could wind up paying more in excess baggage charges then they paid for their ticket.

The cost to check a second bag is only $25 domestic.

JMO but I think Delta is looking for a new source of significant revenue. Expect to pay if your bag is over sized or overweight.

edited to add a bag that's overweight and oversized will cost $265 each way. Try to get a box or buy a suitcase in the airport if the suitcase you brought is too big.

That's nothing - you should try flying RyanAir in Europe - they charge you for EVERYTHING including a fee for on-line check in and even more for counter check in (and you have to check in SOMEhow)...and I read recently they're looking at putting a device on the door of the washrooms that required a 1 GBP coin.....:rolleyes1

You're right I didn't read down. The draconian fees for over sized and overweight bags are a year old. I don't remember reading about it when the change was made. The 7/1/09 changes were minor.

Passengers riding Delta should be careful. It's only matter of time before a bean counter decides to start measuring bags.

Already do...(and they include the wheels - a friend of mine flew on a US airline - I don't think it was Delta but one of the other major ones - her suitcase measured 62" exactly but she didn't include the wheels - but THEY did and made themselves a bunch of extra money:confused3....). Doesn't matter what US airline - I think from a quick look they are all charging for the 1st piece of baggage, over size and over weight fees and even the little snacks that used to be handed out free are now quite pricy....we are at their mercy for sure. :worship:
I know that Air Canada had started charging on the 2nd bag but I believe they have since dropped it - hopefully it doesn't come back but that may be another reason why I can get a flight from Bangor on a US Carrier for $262 CDN and the same flight from Moncton or Fredericton is $660 and 785 respectively...(so it appears that if you want to pay $400-$500 extra for a ticket, you can avoid paying $15 for your suitcase????:confused3 They still charge for oversize and over weight I think.

Seriously, people really need to pack lighter! Some folks bring so much stuff that they really don't need! I watched two young girls try to check in suitcases that were absolutely bulging. Every single pocket was stuffed. When the resort airline check-in people told them they were overweight and couldn't check them in there, they were so clueless. They didn't measure them, but there is no way they weren't over in that department too. Best advice I've ever heard: Pack your suitcase for vacation and then take half of it out and leave it home.

I saw on the news last night that you can save money by standing though. :scared1::rotfl: What will they do next???

Also, Southwest and JB don't charge for the first bag.
