NEW DCL Navigator App - Texting Feature!

I cruise to get away. My smartphone will be in the safe the entire cruise, and I'll be with my family the entire time with the paper Navigator in my back pocket. No need to text. :scared1:

I completely understand the desire for family time, but I spend all day every day with my family (we homeschool and my husband works from home). The wave phones are such a pain. I would have loved to be able to text last week on the Wonder!

Fortunately, they will always have paper navigators, too, so we can both be happy :)

I was told DCL's IT team is now aware of the glitches and are working feverishly on the issues.

Of course we all know how efficient the DCL's IT team is ... but, perhaps they subbed this out? ? ?

Others were using this app successfully aboard. I think it's just glitchy for certain devices, like the Blue Tooth in automobiles.

Have faith.

:)

ETA; The internet is fast fwiw, IME. Definitely upgraded from 2 years ago. :thumbsup2

Disney IT is on it! It should be up and running sometime before smartphones are obsolete and we have implants in our brains. ;)

Just got off the Dream this morning. Texting feature worked great for us. In case anyone was wondering, it doesn't work on Castaway Cay. You have to add other people's ID numbers to your list before you can text them.

When we were cruising in June, my DH ran the Castaway Cay 5k. My DD and I stayed on board and had breakfast. The plan was that DH would text when he was finished so he could figure out where we were to meet up.

We texted our locations and it he was easily able to find us. On the other side of things, during the race he made friends while running with a couple who hadn't taken a phone and this couple were traveling with their child and also a set of parents. The grandparents had the child, but the couple couldn't figure out where they were after they were done with the 5k. So the parents headed back to the ship, just as the other group disembarked. Not finding each other, the grandparents took the child back to the ship while simultaneously the parents headed back to the beach to look. We saw them later in the day and they didn't get it all sorted out until lunch! What a mess. They were really bummed they hadn't taken their wave phones, spending their entire morning just trying to meet up.

Just got off the Dream today. dCL app worked great! Was able to keep in touch with family and the new friends we made in our FE group. It worked every time.

Only issue was you can only have one device. We tried to do phone on the ship and iPad in the room but messages only went to one device. It didn't work on CC.

I just read about this and googled it to here. I would think by now it could be on the other ships. It would really be useful for our family.

Any experience or rumors for wonder or magic?

For those of you that have used the texting feature on the Android version of the Navigator app...can you please tell me what type of alert do you get when a message comes in? I'm wondering if users can assign a sound to the notification alert or is it restricted to only get a vibration alert, like the Wave phone. I assume that the app uses the standard Android notification system so it would seem that users could set notification ringtones.

It may get annoying hearing alerts go off as passengers get messages. What's been the experience?

Thanks in advance.

My Samsung used the default ding alert along with a vibration.
Don't remember if you can change it.
It worked really well on the Dream in december.

We were on the Jan 3 sailing on the Fantasy and the app and chat feature were worthless. The app kept crashing and the chat feature wasn't working. I would say it worked 10% of the time, but when it did work I really like it.

I'm confused by your last paragraph. If DH has a phone, I have a phone, and DS has an iPod, and we all have the app downloaded, we can all message each other, right?

I had no alert at all. I had to open the app each time to see if a message had come in.

Each person gets only one device. That's at they were saying.

I was on the Dream in February. I had the app but we set sail before anyone in my large group had downloaded it. I was able to peruse it a little but I can't remember what it looked like.
We are going on the members cruise in August and im making sure we all have the app before leaving port. Maybe I can get a screen shot of the app and post it here for others.
