I don't believe that the ship is finished. Which means the sailing for the 90th anniversary in April 2002 was not done. I think it is still being built. If someone else knows more I would love to hear it.
My thought was, since the article is dated Oct 1, either they got the launch date wrong or they are running REALLY behind and will probably sail next year. BUT! I would still love to do a transatlantic on the Titanic sans ice bergs.
I can't imagine a sailing like this not selling out in about 3 days though! There will be Titanic survivor's relatives, etc. on board... maybe James Cameron, Kate Winslet and Leonardo will cruise too!
It will probably be hard to get tickets, but just show me where to sign up and I'll take 4 !!!! First Class, if you please.
Please notice the first sentence: "A Swiss-U.S. partnership said it will build a $500 million, full-size replica of the sunken luxury liner to cross the Atlantic on the tragedy's 90th anniversary in April 2002."
Translation: "We were promoting this failed business venture over four years ago, but there's still no ship under construction. The article is actually from April 7, 1998, but was recently reposted to the Augusta Chronicle online edition. We missed the 90th anniversary. Maybe we should try for the 100th."
And please notice the last sentence: "Organizers with the project's U.S. partner, Titanic Development Corp. of Las Vegas, said more investors will be needed."
Translation: "We're having trouble raising the money because investors don't want to invest in ship whose design wouldn't be competitive with modern cruise ships that are much larger and have veranda staterooms. Face it, the novelty of being a replica of the Titanic would wear out quickly."
Have only just come across this thread.
As a relative of someone who went down with the Titanic (my great grandfathers brother) I am fasinated by the ship but would never ever set foot on a replica or have any desire to see the Titanic raised from the sea bed. It caused too much heart ache in my family to be a tourist attraction.
I was watching a TLC show about cruise ships the other day and I saw a blurb about the "new" Titanic being built. This was an old show and I was curious if they had ever done it. I guess not. If it ever did get built, I think I would like to tour the ship but not sail on it.
On September 25th, the company RMS Titanic Inc. (SOST) said it's not planning any more expeditions to the famous Titanic shipwreck and will surrender its exclusive rights to excavate the site of the sunken ship. http://biz.yahoo.com/djus/020925/1201000651_2.html
Interesting story...I had read about the lawsuit in the Wall Street Journal a while back and was wondering how it would be resolved. Somehow, selling those items just wouldn't seem right. Seems like if they belong to anyone, it would be to the relatives of the passengers.
We went to the Titanic exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago, and it was amazing. I could believe how well-preserved many of those items were. There is also a huge iceberg for visitors to see how long they can keep their hand on it. The sign next to it says that's how cold the water was that night. Very sobering to imagine such a terrible tragedy.
