We finally found what we want at the right $. So how do I transfer info from old computer to new ? And besides bookmarks/favorites what do I need to transfer ?

Oh yeah, pix and files too. lol

You can ghost your old hard drive to your new one. Have either phyllis or deb get you my cell phone number and chris and I will talk you through it.

Ghosting on a computer is only a good idea if you are moving the entire contents of your hard drive from one computer to another similar model or if you are upgrading the hard drive in the same computer. Since ghosting makes an image of one machine and transfers it to another machine, I don't think this would be a good idea. Ghosting the hard drive from her OLD pc which would have an older operating system than the new machine, incorrect drivers for her new machine, out-dated software and would be full of years worth of old downloads and possible viruses. The new machine would now be dirt slow with all of those outdated and incorrect drivers.

Simply get an external USB flash (jump) drive and move your files and pics with that device. Very simple to do and it won't mess with the operating system of the new machine.

My son said I have so little to move, email it to my Yahoo acct or do the flash drive thingy. I'm afraid to ghost cause I may have a virus or something also.

I used a flash drive when I changed last time. They're cheap at Wal Mart, and you can transfer a section at a time. Favorites, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music. Those are the biggest areas.

I keep a folder on the hard drive for each of the kids, so I had to transfer those as well. The flas drive is about the easiest thing to do, I think.

Windows file and transfer wizard should take care of you .. just put them both on the network and vrun the wizard. Go have dinner, come back and your new pc has all your docs and pictures, your email is all set up, and it looks just like your old one (bookmarks included!)

Hey, I have that on here, another option, thank you.

Sorry, I assumed you needed to move a lot of stuff. Since you don't the point is moot. When I had to ghost my drive, there was a ton of stuff, including my website backup files on there. No flash drive could help me. Best of luck to you. I shall go elsewhere and keep my mouth shut.

I just went thru this when I got a new computer with Win 7 professional (64bit) and wanted to transfer all the stuff from my old Win XP (32bit) computer. There are a lot of caveats on the Windows Easy Transfer and Windows file and folders transfer programs so I decided to do it manually. I also have all my data, etc. on a separate HD partition so I just copied that over to my new computer via using an external USB HD which you should have anyway for storing your backups on. The two other things you will need to work thru and in my case a third are your bookmark/favorites for whatever browser you are using and the My Documents folder from your old computer. The My Documents is easy since that is just done via using the USB HD method. The bookmarks/favorites will depend on what browser you are using and I use FireFox and there are directions on their website and you basically replace you profile on the new computer with the one from your old computer.

The third item I had to wade thru was I use Norton Internet Security and it has an option to securely store user names and passwords to easily sign onto your various website and again since I was doing a clean install of Norton using my remaining copy I had to manually transfer that and can't remember exactly how I did it, but I finally got there.

One final thing to be aware of is that most of the new computers come with Win 7 home edition and if you have a lot of XP programs like a scanner, Word processing programs, various utilities and programs, etc. you will probably not be able to use those unless you get Win 7 professional and download the XP system option. Even then there still might be some old XP programs that simply won't run under the XP option in Win 7. The two that were simply incompatible for me was my backup program - Acronis 9.0 and my external 24bit live Sound Blaster stuff.

I want to donate the old PC, I was told to use dban, anyone ever used this to clean up your hard drive ? It's suppose to be what the FBI uses to do their stuff.

All new PCs will come with Win7 now. But there is no problem with backwards compatibility with the Word processors. The Win7 "XP virtual Machine" is not required to run XP Software. it is required to run a WHOLE VERSION Of XP in a Window on your Win7 desktop.

Hardware will require driver updates to restore functionality, and your SB soundcard has issues because of the way WIn7 manages the Hardware Abstraction Layer.. basically putting a jailcell around anything that wants to interact directly with any hardware. Creative was getting lazy with their drivers. My soudcard works fine with it, (and any new pc would haev a soundcard in it already, with full Win7 support).
