New Carry-on restrictions -- effect on DME???

I have a feeling this is going to be a long thread ....

I'm a big DME fan, I especially love the automatic luggage delivery. Since I always pack 24 hours' worth of supplies in my carry-on no matter where I fly, the several hours' lag before checked luggage is delivered never affected me in any way.

But now, we aren't permitted to take liquids with us into the cabin of the aircraft. I may be branded as a heretic, but I think I might go to baggage claim and pick up my own luggage in November.

We arrive around 9:45 p.m. or so. I intended to have our bags delivered early the next morning and just function with our carry-ons for the first night. But now, we won't be able to bring toothpaste in our carry-ons, or my wife's contact lens solution. I can do OK with Disney shampoo, and maybe DIsney will start to provide little tubes of toothpaste, too. But my wife will need her contact lens solution.

As a result, we'll have to go to baggage claim before going to DME because we'll at least need the bag that has my wife's contact lens solution and our toothpaste (and she'll probably want her hairspray and cosmetics, too, now that I think about it). Anyway, if I'm already delaying myself by going to baggage claim to wait for a small bag with toiletries in it, I might as well wait for our 2 suitcases, too.

Do you think I have any way around this?

I wonder if a lot of people will do this, and whether the DME buses will be able to accommodate a possible surge in luggage brought to the buses.

Interesting point. DW and I will be arriving at 3 PM, so the delay shouldn't affect us. But folks like yourself may have to go to baggage claim. I have heard that they do allow you to grab your luggage if you forgot your (or didnt get) your ME tags. Don't know if they still do, but I can't see why not. The busses have room underneath.

Perhaps you could check one bag that has your 24 hour supplies without your ME tag and that way the one bag will make it through to baggage claim. Then you are good to go and then ME can deliver teh rest of your stuff (with the tags). Remember, tagged ME bags dont make the carousel - they get grabbed before.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, arriving late at night like that, you are between a rock and a hard place.

You could pick up a toiletry kit at MCO once you land, but arriving that late, and if you are delayed any at all, there is a good chance outlets at MCO will be closed.

It is also likely the store at your resort will be closed also.

The only thing I could suggest is shipping your toiletries to yourself at your resort.

Then you could pack your 24 hours of clothes in your carryon, pick up your toiletry box when you check in, and have the rest of your stuff on DME as normal.

My biggest hope is that if this lasts for any period of time, WDW will step up to the plate and have a "liquid kit" for sale at the front desks of resorts. (shaving cream, contact solution, toothpaste, etc.)

We were considering trying DME for the 1st time on our trip this Saturday returning following Saturday. All the while I've been looking for decent rental car rates and have EA reserved for $148. With all that is going on, I think we'll just rent the car. Our flight is schedule to arrive at MCO at 8:30pm (could be later, if security starts holding up flights), we'll have the same issues as above, Daughter wears contacts, the clothes and toiletries for the next day etc., etc, etc....

My other concern with DME (at this point of heightened security). We have a 7:00 am flight out of MCO next Saturday, DME would probably have scheduled our pick-up around 4:00 am, I'm wondering if they will be moving those up to say 3:00 am, now that airline websites are now recommending that you be to the airport 3hrs prior to flight time. I know with a car we can get to the airport, drop off the car in about 30 minutes....So that will give us a little bit of extra sleep time.....

Here's to a good/safe trip for all! :wizard:

What do you do if your luggage doesn't make your flight? That doesn't change. I'd hope the restrictions will be lifted by November, at least enough to allow for a small, sample sized, bottle of contact lens solution. The days of brining cases of water and large bottles of HBA may be history but small, sealed, bottles of contact lens solutions might be allowed soon.

Most hotels will furnish a complimentary toothbrush, toothpaste, disposable razer and shaving cream if a guests forgets to pack it. Some hotels will sell it to you but willingness to supply complimentary items is actually one of the criteria that's used in rating hotels. I guess the hotels could also have sample size solutions of contact lens solutions BUT many people have their favorite brand.

Another reason why I'm glad we have the car...(My rate is now down to $129). If the luggage doesn't come through, we can stop at walmart and pick-up some contact solution or anything else we need......

Looking forward to a great trip to the world! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Forget the rental car... You can always take a cab to walmart if you don't get ur luggage on time... it can't possibly be anywhere near 129$.... Enjoy your trip! I sure wish i were going sooner :bounce:

Thank you for your attempt to help :goodvibes , but you actually missed my point.

My point was that one of the great conveniences of using DME is being able to totally skip baggage claim. Now that it seems I really can't skip it entirely, it's not going to take me any longer to wait for 3 bags than it will for one bag.

From Day One, guests always had the option of claiming their own bags and bringing them to the bus. I never dreamed of availing myself of that unnecessarily time-consuming option -- until now.

There's a clause (According to the TSA site http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/threat-change.shtm) that you will be permitted to bring 'essential non prescription medication' in your carry on. Do you think your wife's contact lens solution will fall under that? It's essetial to her contacts which are essential to her eye site, but it's non prescription.

Our flight got changed and we land now, if on schedule, at 905 pm and will only have our carry ons so the debate is on for us about using Mickey soaps and buying toothpaste at the resort or checking & picking up our carry ons before meeting DME. This trip will only be 3 nights....... starting next week!

Can't help you much on the toothpaste, but if the contact solution is your biggest worry, your wife can have her eye doctor give her a sample of disposable extended-wear contact lenses (most companies will offer a free trial pair). I wear Accuvue and can wear them up to a week at a time and since she won't be taking them out at night, she can wait until the next day to get her contact solution.

Good idea! ... but my Spidey-sense tells me it won't fly. One of the reported methods of the thwarted British terrorists had something to do with using either contact lens solution, or a contact lens case, or something like that. So what I mean is, I think TSA might be ESPECIALLY sensitive about contact lens stuff.

Another WONDERFUL suggestion that may help countless others who read this, but not Mrs. CleveRocks ... she wears hard contacts, not the soft ones. Reportedly the soft ones can't fit well on her weird little eyeballs, or something like that ....

THANK YOU ANYWAY!!!

As someone earlier has posted, if you ship a package to your hotel to await your arrival, you wouldn't have to worry about baggage claim. It's a cheap and effective way to have the essentials "with" you when you check in. :thumbsup2
Most hotels are used to this, especially the on-site ones, and if you need information on how to address it, call the hotel. We've done it numerous times without ever having a problem. :thumbsup2
Good luck in finding the "right" answer for you. :goodvibes

I wonder if the overload of people shipping "essential" to the hotel will cause Chaos for the hotel.

I work at a convention center... and deal with people/guests shipping packages to our facility prior to their arrival... and we charge 25$ per 100lbs. Wonder if all the incoming packages will result in disney charging to accept your packages.

how 'bout just wearing glasses on travel day? then the contact lens issue is a non-event...

i think the time it would take to grab one bag off the luggage carousel would not be much longer than it would take for the other person in your party to go to the DME counter and plan to meet at the bus line... when we rent a car typically dh/kids go get luggage and i go to the car rental counter and they are usually there before i'm done!

while the buses have space underneath for luggage, do they have *enough* space if most of their passengers started fetching their own luggage?

That's the biggest issue here. Our bus to All-Stars was full in May, (mid day on a Saturday). With kids, etc., the underneath was pretty full with strollers, carryons, a couple of ECVs, etc. If every single passenger had brought all of their luggage, they would not have been able to fill up the bus with passengers.

Plus, every passenger bringing all of their luggage slows the entire system down as it takes longer to load and unload.

Having the luggage done in the background is what makes Magical Express as good as it is.

FedExing a box to your resort the night before with 10am tracked delivery should solve your problem. Then you can see before you leave if it arrived, and then decide whether to pack duplicates in an emergency checked bag without the yellow tags. Just out of curiosity, I priced at drugstore.com for the essentials, shaving cream, contact solution, hairspray, makeup foundation, sunscreen. It was about $30 to purchase these items with free shipping. FedExing your own items should cost less than that.

Going to Disney, DME is never sold out. Should the underside of the bus get full they'll dispatch the bus and roll in another. By the way they reserve the right to require you to re-check baggage at the welcoming area for automatic resort delivery.

Going home DME'll figure out some way to get everyone to the airport. Perhaps let people carry luggage into the bus aisles. Perhaps prepay for a few cabs on the spot.

If the baggage compartment was chock full going home, yes it would take time to sort things out at the airport given the separate drop offs on the A side and B side. Someone on these boards reported of a time when the DME driver made only one airport dropoff stop, no detailed reason was given.

A few thoughts and one fact.

Fact = at least for today: My dh is flying from Phi to LAx on Saturday and called AA today to determine if he can have an extra pair of contacts and or some solution in his carry on and the answer was no. This may change by the time he flys on sat but for now he has to think about wearing his glasses and packing his contacts and solutions in his checked bags.

Thoughts - Trip befor last, I arrived at MCO at 9ish and due to the late hour and the fact that I was the solo adult with 2 kids I grabbed my bags. It was fine. I arrived in the ME line with the rest of my flight, even those who didn't head to baggage claim. There was a ton of room underneath = remember when it was mears and there was no "magical luggage delivery" all the luggage fit then right?

For our next trip I am at the Dolphin and will use a towncar as ME isn't available but following that if the restrictions aren't lifted I will either send myself a box of essentials or pick up my luggage to carry on ME again.

FWIW - any option is worth it for our safety. I choose a bit of inconvenience over the "terror and fear" THEY are trying to provoke.

At least today, DH's experience was that they'll only let you take prescription medication on the airplane and only if it has the original label. He saw lots of people have to throw away their contact lens solution and eye drops. Then, some of these people thought they'd be smart and buy contact lens solution once they were past the screening-remember there are lots of little shops. Well, surprise! Everyone had their carry-ons searched again as they got on the airplane. He talked with more than one grumbling passenger who'd had to discard their contact lens solution at security, buy more at the shops inside security, only to have it confiscated again as they boarded the airplane.

I am in the opposite situation. I am getting in very early after an overnight flight. We are planning to head to the parks and won't have the sunblock we prefer. So, my choices. Pack a small bag and pick it up off baggage carousel or buy some I don't like when I get to WL in their shop. It just probably what i don't usually use. Oh, well I have a month to see how this plays out or if it changes.
