I just bought my first new car. The dealership was really pushing for me to buy the Teflon coating for the exterior because it's a dark color. I always thought these things were just hype but they were pretty convincing. I walked away without it, but now I'm having second thoughts.

Does anyone know about this stuff?

Thanks,
Edie

if you do coat it don't do it at the dealership they over markup the price it should cost you under 100 if you get it done at a good detail shop

Check your warrenty first, it may negate it if you put any finish on it. This happened to us in the early 90's.

Manufacturers make paint to last. Dealers offer coatings to make money. Walk away!

Modern paint lasts. Old paint didn't. Coating was to extend the life of the old cheap, bad paint.

Some auto dealer add ons have their place and can be useful and worth the money: GAP insurance, some of the other F&I products, but clear coat is not one of them.

Pat yourself on the back and tell them to coat themselves if they keep pushing. :)

Don't buy the paint protection!

Don't waste your money on this junk. My friend who worked at a Chevy dealer said it comes in a $5 bottle. It's just wax, and they make promises about it lasting for years. NO car wax lasts for years. Read the warranty book for "Autoarmor", it says the warranty is void if you don't wash & wax on a regular basis. The salesman tells you it lasts 2 years or more without waxing. It's amazing how gullible Americans are, tell them what they want to hear, and they'll believe it.

There's 3 things you just can't do in life, folks:
1) Remove cellulite by rubbing a cream on your legs.
2) Remove wrinkles by rubbing a cream on your face.
3) Go 2 years without waxing your car by rubbing a cream on it.

Consumer Reports says it's just "profit" for the dealer. You did the right thing.

This made me think of the scene from Fargo where William H. Macy's character was trying to sell the clear coat to this guy who insisted he didn't want it! I love that movie.

Anyway, you did the right thing.
