New car depreciation question

Only GM, other than Tesla and Rivian who never supported it.

All the other manufacturers have said they have no plans to remove or limit CarPlay or Android Auto.
I think VW too, or maybe just their EVs. My son has been complaining that whatever software VW preloads on their ID4s is slow and full of bugs. He worked in computer IT and has explored hacking into the system to put Android Auto in.

I thought about adding it to our older lexus and there were actually aftermarket integration modules available on ebay, never got around to actually trying one though.

Depending on the year sub 2024(I think) it's been well documents how low it was due to the lack of CPU power and there are hacks out there to trim the apps to gain cpu/ram back to. 2024+ got an upgraded CPU and ram so it's supposed to be better/

They still have CarPlay and don't plan on stopping it. I just got back from a car show and asked around — only GM was a firm no. However, they confirmed their software will be Android-based and should support the same apps available in the Play Store, though it’ll obviously be a subset like it is now. Apple Music will be supported, but not Apple Maps and probably not Apple Home, which has more to do with Apple than GM.

Its a 2021

We do something similar, buy a new reliable car and hold 10 to 15 years, getting rid of it once repair and mantinance costs start climbing. I have always figured everything nets out the same vs buying say a used 3 year old car, which will need to be gotten rid of 3 years sooner. Plus with a new purchase, your also getting the latest safety and tech features (for instance, I can't live without wireless CarPlay after getting it on our new 2024 purchase).
But see, this is where depreciation does matter - it DOESN'T net out the same, because the first three years are the most expensive. It doesn't matter much if you buy a car that doesn't depreciate much, but if you buy a 2-3 year old used car that has depreciated significantly, you save enough money upfront that your per-year cost is lower even if you end up selling sooner. Granted, keeping a car for 15 years is likely to be pretty cost effective no matter whether you buy new or used; the difference matters more if you only keep for 10 years. (and I also am now fully committed to Android Auto, and heated seats, and I don't want to ever buy a vehicle without either!)

I rarely sell cars because I tend to run them into the ground and drive them until they’re fully dead. For me the depreciation of a new car isn’t about when it’s going to be sold (ie how long I would hold onto it), but the fact that you can buy the car so much cheaper if you let someone else take the hit on the premium of purchasing a new car.
