I know of cardirect and Costco for finding a good deal on a car, but is there any other strategies/websites you all use. I want to buy a NEW Hyundai in the next month and trying to figure out the easier, minimal hassle way.

Where can you see the invoice price?

Trying to save some cash : )

Costco is not like it used to be. We bought a car in December and Costco was very different than the last time we bought a car, The deal is now $50 over dealer invoice and the dealer shows you the invoice. There are far fewer dealers participating then before and we found those that were participating to be painful with still wanting to haggle for the price of the car. AAA also has deals and you can see the price online prior to going to the dealer. AAA and Costco were very close to one another. This was in suburban Washington DC.

We bought a Honda Civic for my daughter in 2013, and we called the Honda dealer(s) in the suburban Washington area. I didn't think it was a deal either, and I continued to negotiate until I got the price I was willing to pay. It was more than a thousand below the Costco price. we also got the $500 off for graduate within the last or next six months. We didn't mention this $500 until after we got what I felt was the lowest possible deal, then we kicked that to the table. I visited at least 11 Honda dealers and our car was not at the one we bought from. They brought in the color and model we wanted by late afternoon of the day we bought it. Our deal went down as a Costco deal even though it wasn't at the Costco price and we received an additional certificate for $200 in dealership credit to be used for goods or services. And we found better deals in Maryland then in Virginia - Virginia dealers were not very negotiable. One Va dealer told me I should find a car I could afford. So I did - across the Potomac....same car he wouldn't drop another thousand on.

I always use Edmunds.com. You can see the invoice pricing, as well as what rebates/offers are out there currently for each model, and what others in your area are actually paying for the vehicle.

Do people often get the invoice pricing?

Depends. Consumer REports shows dealer invoice, AND wholesale price, which is what the dealer pays after all the kickbacks from the automaker after they sell the car. Dealers can sell a car for less than the invoice if there are incentives after the sale.

Autobytel.com is another site. local dealers compete to give you the best price. worked for my Dh when we bought an Elantra new a couple years ago.

good Luck!!

A lot depends on how popular a model is. Edmunds.com will show the invoice price as well as the "showroom price" (msrp) for each option and the total for the car with the options you select. It also shows any rebates/deals on the car at present, and what the average purchaser in your area is paying for that model at present (they call it tmv: true market value). I have found the dealer window sticker prices matched what the site listed for the msrp prices.

They redesigned the site a while back and I liked the old one better, but all this info is still on the new site, though sometimes it takes me a while to find it now. They seem to want to link you with dealers for everything, I guess that is what pays the bills for the site. Select the make and model and look for the "Build and Price Your Car" option.

We used truecar.com to buy 2 new cars in the last 8 months. The price was cheaper than Edmunds.

I have never used Edmunds to actually buy the vehicle, just to learn the invoice pricing and any rebates/incentives currently available. This way I went to the dealer knowing the facts and figures. Without that knowledge I have found you don't get the complete picture at the dealership.

As other PP have stated, research those websites and also begin negotiations just before the end of the month. Dealers want to move inventory off by month end. So for February, I would begin on the 26th.

Did Consumer Reports on line have almost all the cars listed or just some? How up to date is it? Anyone know? I had it a while back when I purchased some appliances and it helped but it didn't cover them all.

Did you use the info., or did you buy the car through the site? Can you do that?

We are in the same boat. Our Honda Odyessey van that was supposed to last forever fell to the terminal transmission issue 2003's were found to have. I am so sad. We babied that van and it is at 123,000. I hoped to drive it for much longer. Dealer (no - I wouldn't get it fixed at the dealer) quoted $6700 for the transmission. :crazy2:

So I am trying to look outside the Honda/Toyota box since that didn't work out so well. How is Hyundai's warranty?

Not sure where I read it or how true it is, but I read that you should buy on the last Tuesday of the month for your best deal.

Ebay motors. Worth paying to have the car shipped to you. We have bought many, many cars that way.
