We've decided on a black car and the dealership wants to sell us:

3M PLASTIC FILM PROTECTOR (for front hood and side mirrors), PAINT PROTECTOR and CRYSTAL FUSION (a windshield product)

Do any of these really work? We know the value is not there but we are not ones to wax and RainX our cars. We live in a very cold and snowy area where they use sand in addition to salt on the roads for traction.

Thanks so much! I know I can count on the DIS for great advice!

A plastic film protector is applied to the front of the hood to prevent tiny nicks from sand kicked up in front of you that you run into.

Some folks think it looks unattractive. Go see a floor model of a car (any make) with that option on it.

Protectors that are applied as liquid or paste like car wax and cannot be seen after the job is done are not worth it; they simply wear off in a few weeks.

9 times out of 10 anything the dealer wants to sell as an add-on is a RIPOFF and not worth the money!! Some might even say 10 out of 10.

Dealership tried to sell us some sort of protective coating when we bought our new G6 last year. Fancy video with jets, or somesuch... opted to PASS.

Run away!....Run Away!

Hand wash your car (once a month), wax it yourself (twice a year), and buy a little bottle of factory touch up paint (the kind with the little brush).

Yes........black paint is the hardest to maintain.

You will save hundred of dollars and after 36 months, both cars will look to be in pretty much the same condition.

I know the sand/salt issue is a challenge to any car, but if you guys want to save a little dough, you have to put forth a little effort.

The 3M film may actually work, but it is probably expensive and does not really have a proven track record yet. Can you find anybody with a 4 year old car that has the film applied? Look closely at it to see how it has aged.
