I'm looking to purchase a camera to take DS senior pictures. I would like to keep the price under $600.

Are you looking for a high-end fixed lens (meaning, not interchangeable) or an entry level dSLR, for which you can purcase other lenses and accessories, as the need/desire arises? The former would be well under your budget limit. At present, the Pentax K100D with 18-55mm kit lens, for +/-$470 is an exceptional value for a dSLR.

for your budget, I would look very hard at the pentax that Yekcim just recommended. And add a fast prime, so you can get some good shallow DOF for some of your shots.
