New buy-how's UY impact timing of points?

I think this is my 3rd question for today as a potential new buyer...

Looking to buy VGC or VGC/BLT combo if DVC will split 160 points. This question is about UY and when the points become available as a new owner (I've read the UY thread, but I get more from it about continuing use undertanding vs. brand new usage).

First question - what UY can I pick at VGC or BLT? From what I understand, I can pick my UY when you buy through Disney. But are there restrictions on selecting a UY on a resort that isn't open yet (VGC, BLT)?

Second question (or maybe 3rd since there was 2 questions in my 1st one) - if I pick a UY that is prior to now (say April), do I get 2009 points (Apr09 - Mar10)? Or since the resort isn't opening until August, would I not get points until Apr 2010 (which could make us think about a Sept UY in order to have points available for an Oct09 trip)?

Thanks

You may always book at your Home Resort as early as 11 months before check-in date you want ( ie for July 4 2010 you may call MS as early as August 4 2009 to book ) - MS determines if you will have the points to cover the dates the resssie will occur so you don't even need to spend time figuring that out ;). If you own points at more than one resort you can only book at each particular resort 11 months through 7months+1 day before checkin using only those points that are tied to that specific resort; at 7 months all points become "equal" so to speak and that is when you may use/combine points from different Home Resorts to book at any DVC resort.

I'm not sure what Use Years at VGC are presently available - hopefully others will be along who can help you out on this. You may be right, it is possible that April Use Year will start with April 2010 UY allotment of points. Also, until the unit you've purchased at a new resort is declared into DVC inventory you will not be able to use the points for a stay prior to that date. For DVC January, May, July & November are NOT Use Years. Ideally, if there is such a thing because travel habits will change over the many years of your membership, you should try to pick a UY that is at the beginning of your usual travel cycle ( ie if you plan to travel mostly in May, July & October then April UY is good choice because you will have until November to bank your points into next Use Year if you had to cancel one of those trips during that span of months <just note you'd need to cancel at least 31 days before checkin for points to be bankable into your next Use Year & only points from current Use Year allotment are bankable so any points that were already banked or borrowed from upcoming UY that are used in reservation would need to be used by March 31>.

Best wishes:goodvibes

I read that the first year available for BLT is February 2009, for GCV it's June 2009.

Questions that my make a difference in your DVC future are best answered by a DVC Guide. Sometimes we know what the latest correct information is and sometimes we don't. I have sent you a PM. :goodvibes

As long as Disney still has April points to sell for BLT (and I would assume that they do), you would get 2009 points with your purchase, if you buy now.

I have a June UY and got 2009 points for BLT. I could start using them in August of 2009. MF's, since the resort is not open, do not start until then. I know that I am going to be paying 4 months worth of fees for my June UY points for 2009.

As far as VGC, I believe the PP was correct, that the first set of points are being given in June UY 2009, with no use of those points until the resort opens. MF's for those points will also be prorated for 2009 from the time the resort opens (or the time you get your points, whichever is later). I think I read that VGC may now open in late September!

If you want to split between BLT and VGC, and if Disney does allow it, they will most likely expect you to get the same UY. In that case, if you want April, you would get April 09 points for BLT and then April 2010 points for VGC.

However, if you took something like June, you would most likely get 2009 points for both resorts. Of course, that assumes that there are still points available for those month.

The best thing is to contact DVC and see what they are selling and if it works. The guides are great and really no pressure!

Good luck!!
