New burger at sci fi with hot dog???

This is a Disney vacation forum not a diet police forum. You're not getting anywhere by telling people how unhealthy this burger is. If you really want to be the champion of informing people how unhealthy Disney's food is than do it some other way because this obviously isn't working.

Nobody is trying to be the diet police. OP asked about this burger. And I gave my *personal* opinion. Which seems to have led to lots of defensiveness. I don't tell people whether to smoke. I don't tell them what to eat. To each, their own decisions.

There is no "argument."
And this isn't a discussion of the whole menu at Sci Fi diner. The question was, what do people think of the new picnic burger at Sci Fi. This discussion did evolve. But my own opinion was rather simple -- it sounds disgusting beyond a few bites. It is hard to imagine any person with reasonable eating habits even being able to finish off a whole plate.

As to.. It doesn't matter what you eat for 1 week on vacation per year -- that really is te equivalent of saying, I'll smoke a pack per day for a week, but quit the rest of the year. How's it any different? Smoking is no more unhealthy. But our cultural attitudes treat cigarettes as poison nowadays. Meanwhile, our attitudes about unhealthy foods, is more like the attitude about smoking in the 60s. (I know it's not healthy... But I only smoke half a pack per day, and I only smoke filtered tips, so it's not really that bad)

I do 100% agree with you about focusing on quantity. Portion sizes is really the overwhelming problem. A fast food children's meal today, is the same size portion as an adult meal just 1-2 generations ago. The typical American restaurant plate, is usually a double - triple regular portion size.
Go to Paris, where restaurant eating is even more prevalent than America -- and they use plenty of butter, fat, carbs -- but the portions are half the size you find at typical restaurants here.

I believe the OP wanted to know how it tastes not what you think of the calorie content. I am sure the OP knows that the calorie content is up there so that is not under consideration. What she does not know is how it tastes.

Does anyone know if the children's menu has changed or is it the same?

I think things went south when you said you couldn't imagine the "type" of person who would order a burger like this. I took offense because I bet my boyfriend will when we are at Sci Fi next week! But then you explained that you didn't mean any harm... it's hard to tell tone, etc. in on the boards!

Its also hard to make amends on the DIS once you have been deemed to have strayed.

Back on topic - just came back from a trip to WDW a few weeks ago, I had the all american burger, passed on the Picnic burger this time. Sci-Fi has been a family favorite for 8 years now and I must say this trip we were pleasantly surprised with our meal - the burgers were much better than in the past, and we felt that the overall quality of the food has improved at the sci-fi. We go back to the sci-fi every trip for the atmosphere, but I am actually looking forward to going back to try the picnic burger next may.

I should have chosen my words more carefully. You are correct, that you can't read tone on the board. And with just words on the screen, my selection of words could have come across as judgmental. I can't imagine, myself, being able to finish the entire plate.
While I am *not* a model health nut, my appetite -- personally --- is repulsed by truly excessive items.

You can try to moderate your posts all you want by tempering them with the word "personally", this does not change the tone of your posts one bit.

I agree.

While I would not try this burger (I'm a vegetarian) I know my husband would definitely want to try it. Just to see what it was like. He likes hamburgers, he likes hot dogs..why not? Would he finish it? Doubtful, but I can't see the harm in trying it. Not like he's going to make this his normal meal for the X amount of days we are at WDW. :)

There is nothing offensive in my tone, though I do recognize occasional defensiveness in others.

Using the the statement:

repulsed by truly excessive items

Is far different from:

"I don't think I'd like it."

How could you possibly imagine using one of those terms over the other might be viewed as judgmental?

I don't care about the drama, that burger looks so good! I know where I am going in May! :yay:

Would it be wrong if someone said, "I absolutely LOVE it."
So we should all censor ourselves and simply say "I like it" "I dislike it"
It's somehow wrong to use stronger adjectives?
Or you don't object to super strong "like"-- you only object to a person expressing Strong dislike?

Every person is entitled to their own personal opinion. And within the realm of common respect, every person is entitled to express their opinion.

Seriously, I don't see what the big deal is about eating a cheeseburger and a hotdog wether it be eaten together or separately at one sitting- who hasn't been to a barbeque and when asked which you would like, the answer is BOTH!! I'm a petite person but I can tell you that I could eat one of those burgers-or at least die trying! :lmao::lmao: And when I read the post where he/she said they would hate to see the TYPE of person who would eat one of those, I immediately thought of myself and said " umm...should I be ashamed of myself or what, cause I could eat one of those" :lmao::lmao:

The All American Burger DOES look intriguing and delicious in some respects. (I don't care for saurkraut...) I would probably only be able to eat 1/4 of it, but I'd definitely share it for a meal. p.s. Just had a martini AND a cigarette...BAD...

Havoc, I generally agree with what you post on this board, but think you are out in left field on this one.

For starters, there is no good comparison with smoking. That example just doesnt work and its what started this entire bruhaha.

Also, while your own caloric intake/activity level might make it a bad choice, not everyone is under the same regimen. When I was an active distance runner you would have been shocked at the number of calories I needed just to maintain what mass I had. This holds true to periods of increased stress/activity where our bodies need more calories. Thats not to say that this burger on a vacation is what anyones bodies need, just that consuming such a meal will have a greater effect on some people than others, which is true for any meal, anywhere.

I am not telling anyone else what they should or shouldn't do. And you are right -- caloric needs vary significantly. That said, there are levels that reach excess for just about everyone. Nobody should get offended by simple facts.
There may be a denial that bad food can be as bad as cigarettes, but the medical evidence fully supports the statement.
In facts, for example, 5 ounces of red meat per day (which represents this dish, along with tons of other dishes in thousands of restaurants), has been shown to significantly increase the risk for colon cancer. Processing fats in general, greatly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer.
A smoker may actually have a longer life expectancy than an obese individual. (eating 1 picnic burger will not make a person obese, and smoking 1 cigarette does not qualify as a smoker).
To me.. This meal would be as if the restaurant included a cigarette with the meal.
With excessive eating being such a major problem to begin with -- the majority of Americans are clinically overweight or obese -I personally have a problem with restaurants celebrating the excess. Any person is free to order anything they want, but I stand by my factual medical statements, and I stand by my personal opinion that I am personally grossed out by such obviously excessive dishes.

This is a Disney Trip Planning forum dedicated to Disney Restaurants. It could be argued that most meals at Disney don't meet the Food Pyramid guidelines, and desserts aren't exactly health food either.

If you choose to eat healthy on vacation, good for you. Please feel free to start your own thread about how you eat healthfully on vacation and what delicious treats you find. Many try to find healthful food when vacationing and may appreciate your point of view. That being said, even those that are ultra healthy may sneak in a dessert or a treat once in a while, and that's OK and up to them.

Debating why this meal is or isn't the end of humanity is off topic at this point. The point of view as to why some feel that this meal is a bad health choice, and why they see it as a bad choice, has been shared and noted. At this point there's been enough debating that topic.

My mom and dad ate this on our last trip a couple weeks ago. They liked it. Not sure if I have pictures of it.
