I am toying with the idea of buying some DVC points and thought it might be a good idea to try and rent from someone first.

.........................

However on checking, this price doesn't compare well with booking a Fort Wilderness Cabin for, the same time and duration, which appears bigger, sleeps more with seperate rooms and a full kitchen.

Am I missing something? Is Fort Wilderness not at the same level? Is renting simply not a cheap option?

Help ... Thanks

fort wilderness cabins are not "disney deluxe" and are not within a short walk of epcot (and a longer walk to the studios).

but if you'd be just as happy in a cabin, that's probably a better way to go...and booking directly does allow more options and flexibility in terms of payment and possible cancellation.

I don't know if you'd enjoy spending two weeks in a studio, especially if you've never done it before, but the rates for the Boardwalk are much cheaper if you don't stay on a friday and saturday night. Then the comparison blows the cabins out of the water.

Fort Wilderness is bigger, does sleep more, but is basically a mobile home in the woods.

Don't get me wrong; I've happily rented the cabins at FW, but we had a car (you still can't drive it around the fort) and we weren't looking for a water slide that trip. With Boardwalk there are tons of amenities, it's much fancier, and you can walk into Epcot.

I might suggest you try a Boardwalk sun check in friday check out trip first, and see how you like it.

Boardwalk is within walking distance to Epcot and DHS. There are many restaurant choices. So that commands more money. Fort Wilderness is not within walking distance to any park and has 1 restaurant. One thing to keep in mind is weekends (Fri & Sat nights) are many more points than weekdays. It is usually not cost effective to rent points for weekends. You may want to try Sunday to Thursday nights and then move to another resort.

While Fort Wilderness is a great campground.....it's still a campground.

You can't compare it to a deluxe resort, with all the amenities of a deluxe resort: multiple restaurants and nightlife options right at the Boardwalk, themed pool with a slide, easy walk to Epcot and DHS, easy walk to YC, BC, Swan and Dolphin, with tons of dining options at those resorts.

Thanks all for your advice.

It don't think I really appreciated the quality of the Boardwalk villas. In my mind I assumed they are equal or even less quality than the cabins!!! I assumed they were similar to the all star resorts.:confused3

I like the idea of doing Sun to Thu in the Villa as a first trial.

Thanks again.

Using the 2009 rack rates for a Boardwalk Villas studio, the lowest rate season is $335/night. So for a 14 night stay, assuming no other discounts, you are looking at $4690. That doesn't include the 12.5% accomodations tax, so add another $586.25 in taxes. So those 14 nights will run you $5276.25.

However, to book that same unit through a DVC points rental is $3300, and that assumes you are paying $12/point. With the economy like it is you can most likely find a rental for $10/point, for a cost of only $2750, resulting in a savings of over $2500.

It really depends on the timing of things. Disney is offering a number of deals currently due to the downturn in the economy. Its possible you could find a cash stay package close to that price, but since the DVC rental scenario above would be over 52% off rack rate it may be hard to beat going the rental route during the time you want to stay.

if it's not too much of a hassle to switch resorts in the middle of your stay, this is a good idea.

also, if you have the time, stop at a DVC kiosk (they are all over wdw) and set up a tour to see the model rooms and ask more questions about ownership.

if you are new to renting, you may want to read this thread first:

Yes in most cases it is usually a very good deal compared to paying rack rate & sometimes even a discounted rate that occasionally may be available on cash bookings through Disney's CRO and BWV is in Disney's Deluxe Villas resort category.

However on checking, this price doesn't compare well with booking a Fort Wilderness Cabin for, the same time and duration, which appears bigger, sleeps more with seperate rooms and a full kitchen.

Depends upon if you want a full kitchen and how many are in your party. DVC studios sleep 4 & 5th person is permitted only if child under 3 sleeping in pack & play ( jmho they tend to be tight with 4).

A studio villa at BWV will have private balcony, queen bed and pull-out sofa that can sleep 2, kitchenette area that has sink, micro, coffee maker & under counter small fridge - - if you're leaning towards cooking big breakfast & meals it doesn't lend itself all that well to this although some members do so by bringing along an electric frying pan or crock pot, etc. It will not contain pots or regular dishes & utensils but plastic & paper products so if you're looking for the amenities of a full kitchen you need to book at least a 1 bedroom villa at DVC resorts & if you're looking for a separate bedroom you'd need to book at least a 1 bedroom villa as well.

Best wishes on your planning :goodvibes

DVC resorts are most definitely not on a par with the All-Stars. They're very much in the same class as deluxe resorts, and some are attached to/share facilities with, deluxe resorts.

If you're at all interested in becoming a DVC member, by all means stop by the sales center at SSR during your visit and tour the models. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

Apologies, it certainly wasn't my intention but understand your point.

Will have to think a bit more how to phrase my question.

Thanks to everyone, the info is really useful.
