Our home air conditioner died a few years ago (it was 20 yrs odl), the last few summers without AC have been hard. We wanted to put our tax refund into the AC fund. We have a tri level duplex with about 1000 sq feet. I have no idea how much we are looking at for a new unit. How many 'tons' we need for the house. Plus how much labor should cost. Anyone have any current numbers/info to share. Thanks

I would expect $2,000 - $3,000 for the unit & installation...that would probably be for one of the base models. Prices go up (and way up) from there!

I don't know how I got two posts, Sorry!!!

You may be able to find a few places that will give you free estimates. Just check out the yellow pages and start dialing. Good luck!

We paid $2900 2 summers ago for a 4T a/c for a 2100 above ground sq ft house. I don't feel like it was a huge improvement to our old system but then we had an older roof and original windows. Last year, the roof was replaced due to hail and we got new windows in the bedrooms. I think we may feel a difference this summer. The house seems to hold heat better this winter now that we have made the other changes.

We were able to get a free estimate so it would be good to call around. You could probably also get a better deal now than in the summer when they will be swamped with work. Good luck on getting a good deal, those are not fun house expenses!

We replaced ours last summer. House is 2000 square feet and it was a very efficient model. It was 5600 installed. We are claiming the 500 tax credit this year and have seen good savings on out monthly cooling bills.

We need to get a new one too. It will cost us between $4000-$5000 installed.

The HVAC firms that advertise on the radio here are all promoting their $3,995 deals.

Mine died last year, I opted to spend the $900 to fix it instead of replace it. We'll see if that was a wise choice.

Be sure to check the SEER rating. The higher, the better.
