We were at Epcot yesterday afternoon and I saw something I never expected. The was a couple, perhaps my age, and the guy was well-dressed in western attire (hat, boots, etc.) and I noticed he was wearing spurs. Yes, spurs. They were guests, not performers. I couldn't help wondering why someone would bother to wear spurs on vacation when there is no place to park his horse.

OP....I don't know how you kept a straight face!
You don't have to be Stacy or Clinton (What Not To Wear program) to know that spurs are a bit "out there" without a horse in sight. Strange to say the least.

I saw it a few times while working. Very strange for the rest of us, but probably common for him.

I've also seen women wearing 5" heels and fancy smancy outfits just for a day in the park. I have seen couples here or there dressed up in the evening because of a dinner at Victoria and Alberts, then go to MK for the fireworks or something. But you don't dress up in the morning to sweat all day, then hit some place like V&A for dinner.

I'm not surprised at anything at WDW. That's why we enjoy just "people watching" it's better than watching TV, the people in the parks will make you laugh and cry in in a couple of hours.

Our favorite ride at WDW is a bench for just that reason.

That was my first thought. The spurs might serve as an equalizer against strollers used as battering rams. I have to settle for kicking the offender in the ankle bone as they pass.

I would bet he was a foreign tourist that bought the whole get-up in Dallas or Phoenix. It's not hard to walk in spurs, it's just dumb. I think he was making a fashion statement.

Here is my rule for purchasing clothing in a foreign country. If you don't see anyone else on the street wearing it but you STILL need to own it - leave it in the suitcase till you get home.

As joyjoy said, it's not hard to walk in spurs, but it can be a little jingly (and very attention drawing as noticed by the OP).

Disney World? Not hardly...

Totally agree with this post. You might see someone who was just running into town for something (and not planning on being gone long) who left them on their boots. That's a situation where it's easier to leave them on than to remove them and then turn around and put them right back on shortly.

I know from time to time DD has left hers on when she was at her trainer's or giving lessons herself to someone else and needed to run into Walmart (I think she made a little boy's day one time in Walmart - she heard him tell his mother that he had never seen a REAL cowgirl before! ). However, she would NEVER EVER wear them somewhere long term and certainly not to Disney World!

Her husband (who is a team roper) is even more particular than her. We were at a big show in July and were going to run into a casual restaurant (think nice hamburger joint) for a quick dinner and then straight back to the show. He insisted she take her spurs off before we went in, or he wasn't going!

Since we always haul our horse to the shows, we've never flown to one before. I can't say for sure about the spurs, but I'm positive they wouldn't let the horse on the plane!

I'm guessing that you can carry them on, but I could be wrong. I never would have even thought about that. Show spurs are pretty expensive, and I would hate to have them taken (or stolen from luggage).

He wasn't dressed like Woody. The jeans and boots seemed a little odd given the heat, but what really seemed out of place was the spurs. The boots weren't dressy and looked like regular riding boots and the spurs seemed the same, nothing fancy. I may not have even noticed them except I was just hanging out sitting on a bench.

You know, you'd think if nothing else that they would be in the way getting on and off rides.

That's just one of those things that makes you wonder, I guess - like the time my daughter and her friend walked in a restroom at Universal and saw a woman standing there with her shirt pulled completely up with her chest bared. Understandably, they were a little taken aback and probably looked a little surprised. The woman snapped at them and said, "What do you think you're looking at? You can wipe that look off your faces!" They just turned around and left the restroom. I knew they got back awfully quick but understood why when they told me what happened.

Sounds like something my FIL would do. He seems himself as a "cowboy" but is anything but.
