is what I hear for women over 40 - If I'm going out for the evening and want to make-up my eyes, what can I do? Thanks.

Ive never heard this before in my life. I would (and do) use mascara on my lower lashes and intend to do so when Im 40+, as well.

Do you have a smokey - plum shadow color? That color applied along the lash line, both lower and upper is always very nice. :thumbsup2

I never wear mascara on lower lashes because I am so dark under my eyes. If I am really dressing up I'll wear a little liner on the bottom but I have to be very careful as I believe liner or mascara makes the darkness darker.

The above advice (CathrynRose) is great but also look into soft pencils in smokey tones that can be smudged for a soft, "sultry" look. :teeth: And, USE MASCARA! Lots of it! :hyper:

I'm 45 and wear a smidge of mascara on the very tops of my lower lashes because I don't normally wear eyeliner and my lower lashes don't have much color. I've never heard of such a thing.

Maybe that phrase was invented 100 years ago when 40 years old meant inpending death. I think 40 is pretty darn young to stop using mascara on both lashes.

I have only heard that if you have dark circles under your eyes...I stopped using it on my lower lashes since I have a lot of darkness under my eyes...not sure if it makes a difference or not though :confused3

I have some "shadow" type darkness under my eyes, and don't usually wear mascara under there as I find it makes the shadow more obvious. I use liquid liner for evening - I find it gives great accent and stays in place much longer. I have used clear mascara on those lashes when I wanted them to stay put - I use it on my brows for evening too...

Ok maybe Im just naive, but is it for health or fashion that this is believed? :confused3

I'm over 40 and wear mascara on my lower lashes every day. Can you elaborate on what you've heard?

In lieu of mascara, you could always use a pencil.

My friend went to a fashion/ beauty/teach you how to be a young lady school when we were 14. They taught her to never wear masacara on the bottom lashes. She still doesn't until this day (28) and I still don't know why.

II don't either wear it on my bottom lashes either, because that is what I was taught also. Funny thing is, I can't remember WHY...just that I shouldn't.

btw: I never went to a school to teach me how to be a young lady...as should be evident from my posts! ;)

I know the fashion magazines I read recommend not putting mascara on your bottom lashes, regardless of age. I think the idea is that you want to open up your eyes and not draw attention to darkness under them or whatever. I've been reading that brown mascara helps to soften your eyes though. I think you should wear whatever you want to though, not just listen to the magazines.

I look like that "Runaway Bride" if I don't wear mascara on bottom lashes as well as top ones. I have rather long, thick lashes and it really does look funny to see lush black lashes over the eye and none below. :scratchin Unbalanced somehow.

I read that too in one of the magazines. My friend just got a makeover and they told her that too. Again not sure why

I also do not wear mascara or liner on my bottom lashes. I don't know why just don't - I think it is a little too heavy on some faces...

I just never pay any attention to those "Women over 40 shouldn't..." rules. I have longish hair, wear mascara on my bottom lashes, and wear short skirts on occasion. If there are any other rules around, I probably break those, too. I figure that if I'm over 40 (which I am), I've earned the right to do whatever the heck I want.

Wait till I hit 70!

Definetly unbalanced.

I went to Cosmetology School - they dont teach this. This is extremely weird.

Mascara your lashes - whatever ones you have! :teeth:

I honestly have never heard of this before. I have heard about not using eyeliner on your lower lid after you start to get a little wrinkly, but never mascara. Interesting.

Speaking as someone who went "Over 40" five years ago, I can tell you one thing...when you reach my age you can do whatever the heck you want! One great thing about being "mid 40" is the confidence you have and how you really don't CARE what you're "supposed" to be doing. You do whatever the heck you want! :thumbsup2

However, having said all that.....what about every print ad you see for eye make-up of any kind? Seems to me they always have mascara on top and bottom. I've never heard of that lower lash rule either.

I say do what you think looks best on you. No matter what age you are.

And that advice is from a long-hair wearing, both lashes mascara wearing, short skirts to work sometimes wearing, motorcycle riding WDW obsessed 45 year old! :goodvibes
