..never mind! I answered my own question!

It costs more than you would think. I think a lot of it is what you think your kids really need (ie: lastest toys, clothing labels, etc). My DD has been very active in dance, gymnastic and school sports and it costs! Her colorguard is $300.00 a season, dance for 4 classes is $750.00 (including recital costumes). Gymnastics $75.00 a month. Thankfully choir is free! She's been dancing since she was 3 and doing colorguard since 1st grade, she is now in 4th. We go to a school that offers every camp for sports....cheer, basketball, soccer, volleyball, the lists go on. If you don't get the kids involved early in our school they get left behind, which is sad. I know some of her friends do gymnastics at competion level and it's $300 and up per month. She also has friends (9 years old) with cell phones so they can call at the end of practice, etc. This year she wants Limited Too clothes! I always dressed her in Gymboree (my idea) and that can be costly. Next year she decides if she wants to do band....more expense with lessons and instruments. You have to try out for HS band and it costs close to $1500.00 so it's a thought. I went to a small school and we hardly paid for anything. A larger school with large taxes and we pay more. That doesn't even start the college fund which we started out at $2000.00 a year and mean to do more. We have friends with college age kids and it's eating them alive (2 at a time) and one plans to go for 8 years! The other wants to be a Vet if he can ever get accepted.

I know that this thread has been edited from the original post, but I wanted to reply to this.

I am a graduate student and currently living on my own with my boyfriend. He's a medical student. My parents made the decision that they would cover my undergraduate education and every bill was paid in full. I was told that it was up to me as to how I would pursue a post-graduate education. Most friends I have are in the same situation (or were also responsible for their undergrad tuition) and I think that once one graduates with an undergraduate degree, it should be up to them to take on the loans necessary for further education. My boyfriend is in the same situation and is taking out loans for all medical school expenses. "Children" should become responsible for their own expenses at some point.
